The Warden of Wrath led them south, where the islands clustered closer together. The Fire Flight did not hide here and unleashed fiery breaths like salutes to the Warden as they flew. A red and black mountain, as colossal as one of the Frost Fangs, dominated the area. Its slopes gently disappeared into the jungle, which descended in green shelves toward white sands.

“Behold the mountain of fire,” Wrath declared. “Domain of my Elder, most noble and ancient of all our kin.”

Holt’s eyes widened as he tried to take it all in. Geysers across the mountain’s vast body emitted steam, thick white smoke rose steadily from its peak, and all the land around it groaned as though this king of mountains spoke to its scorching denizens. Midway up the slopes was a cave whose mouth yawned as widely as a dragon’s. The magic radiating from it could be none other than the Elder’s.

The Warden of Wrath guided them to land outside the cave’s mouth. Holt jumped down, felt the heat rising through his boots, and drew his first breath upon the volcanic slope.

He choked and spluttered. The air was thick with a strong, stinging odor. His Champion’s body adjusted to it, though the rancorous taste of the gas remained. It would surely be lethal to normal humans, and Holt had no wish to linger. Even Ash spat and wheezed.

“I’m beginning to hate this part of the world,” Ash said privately.

“It does make wintering in a freezing forest seem relaxing.”

Wrath padded up to the lip of the mountain’s mouth. “Inside,” she said before entering without so much as a backward glance.

Holt peered into the looming passage. “Rake was right. We should have become stronger before coming here.”

“We’ll be all the stronger for it when we leave.”

Holt smiled and patted his dragon’s side. Ash had said, ‘when we leave,’ not ‘if we leave.’ He loved that, even here, Ash’s optimism could not be burnt away.

Side by side, they entered the nest of the Elder of Fire.
