Chapter 27

Gunshots rang out, and my heart raced. I let out a startled scream as a bullet whistled past my ear. My rope shook violently as something jumped next to me. I was met by glowing eyes and sharp fangs, and I screamed. The vampire lunged at me with all his supernatural strength. Focusing, I threw my hand at him, and in a flash of glittery light, he flew backward at a crazy-fast speed, only to crash into the wall.

Before I could catch my breath again, another shape flew at me from out of nowhere and pounced on me with a loud shriek. Fear paralyzed me, but I knew I had to fight. I tried to focus, but it was hard to feel the magic, since I’d used too much on the first attacker. We fought on the rope as I kicked him and tried to gouge his eyes out. He hissed and let out an unearthly scream, then swung his sharp claws came at me. I swerved, and they sliced the rope with a snap.

I fell into a mud pit with a loud splat. Stars danced in my vision, and I scrambled up. It felt as if the wind had been knocked out of me, and the mud was all the way up to my waist. I wiped my eyes, slicked back my muddy hair, and spat out a mouthful of grime. I glanced around for the vampires but couldn’t see a thing.

The vampire spotted me immediately. He sprang from the mud, grabbed me by the throat, and slammed me against the cavernous wall. Once again, he bared his long, sharp fangs. His face was so translucent that it practically glowed. I punched him, but it didn’t faze him.

“Is that all the fight you’ve got, Petal?” he said in a raspy voice. “Your blood can do so much, but your body is weak, so easy to kill.”

My heart thundered, and I was rendered speechless.

Suddenly, Fred came from behind and broke his neck in one quick snap. The vampire slumped into the mud. He was dressed in dark clothes, and his face was pale and grotesque.

“Fred,” I said, rushing into his open arms.

He motioned for me to be quiet, because there were more down there, stalking us. I quickly wiped the mud off my headlamp so I could see, and a beam of light instantly bounced around the walls. I didn’t have vampire vision, and I needed every advantage I could get.

With a loud hiss, another vampire threw a punch. Fred ducked the jab, and it flew right over his head. The vampire moved forward to deliver an uppercut. Fred raised and bent his arm to block, then launched a swing to his jaw. The vampire took it like it hardly fazed him. Fred threw a straight left, but the vampire easily countered and thrust a kick to his gut. The bloodsucker then threw a swing. Fred raised his arm to block it, then threw an uppercut to his chin.
