The scream still echoed in the air as I turned and began to run. Henry followed in my wake. He was in good shape, especially considering that he’d just been abducted, but I was too focused to do more than make a passing note of it.

My footsteps sunk into the soft sand as I raced back across the beach, my steps erasing the twin snake tracks as I pumped my arms and fought for more speed. I got there as fast as I could, but some part of me already knew it was going to be too late.

I wasn’t wrong.

As I turned the corner and caught sight of my Jeep, I felt my chest tighten.

My vehicle stood empty.

The lights were on and the engine still rumbled, but there was no sign of Shelli. The driver’s side door stood wide open, and the seat belt hung loose, sliced cleanly just above the shoulder. I raced past the Jeep and then on for another ten feet before skidding to a halt.

In the distance, I thought I caught the echo of a car engine, but it could have just as easily been my imagination. It was difficult to tell, amidst the sounds of my own ragged breathing and the rush of blood ringing in my ears.

“Dammit,” I cursed. I turned and made my way back to the Jeep. I jumped inside and slammed the door. Henry piled in to the passenger’s side as I threw it into reverse. I hesitated, but only for a moment. Something in the kid’s expression told me he wasn’t going to willingly sit this one out. I could force him out of the vehicle, but it would take time, and besides, I still wasn’t entirely clear as to what was going on.

“Put your seat belt on,” I commanded.

Henry gave me the kind of exasperated look that only a teenager can manage. Then, he turned and put on his seat belt. I hit the accelerator, and we took off, whipping around the bend and back toward the road.

“Okay, kid,” I said, yelling to be heard over the wind. “I’m still a little foggy on what’s going on. Care to fill me in?”

“Who are you?” he asked.

“Marcus Aries,” I said.

Evidently, the name registered. He swallowed. Then, he seemed to reach some sort of decision within himself. “I work the boats down at the harbor. A couple of weeks ago, I was approached by a woman.”

“Would this by chance happen to be Mrs. Lok?” I asked.

Henry blinked. “How did you know?”

“You stay in the business long enough, you learn a few things,” I said.

Henry grunted, but seemed to accept my answer. “She said she and her husband were looking to hire a crew-hand. Someone to accompany them on their trips, keep an eye on the boat, and make sure everything was running smoothly. She stressed that it wasn’t your typical nine-to-five type of job. Odd hours were to be expected.”

“It didn’t strike you as off that they weren’t looking for someone more experienced?”

Henry frowned.
