Abdication Crisis of 1936

Wallis Simpson, Duchess of Windsor

The year 1936 became the year of the three kings.

The story of a king who renounced all his royalty to marry the love of his life will make us teary-eyed, but it sure plunged the royal family into one rocky constitutional crisis. So, what was this constitutional crisis? In simple words, it was a rough patch that the Royals had to go through when King Edward VIII decided to relinquish all the pomp and glory of his Kingship to marry a woman who was a twice divorcee; her name was Wallis Simpson. In 1936, Edward VIII took the reign from his father King George V. It is presumed that the affair began as early as 1934, but Edward obstinately insisted that theirs was a platonic relationship and Mrs. Simpson was not his mistress. This dalliance didn’t just cost Edward his throne, but also the relationship with his parents which was already fraught.

The Church of England forbade remarriage in the instance of ex-spouse being alive and in Mrs. Simpson’s case, her ex-husband was still alive and this was a bitter pill to swallow for not just the Royals but the masses too. When Edward went ahead and proposed to his lover, blatantly ignoring the pronounced dissents from all quarters, it made the entire country go berserk. Edward’s one decision derailed the entire line of succession meaning that Queen Elizabeth, then 10-years-old, would become the heir apparent and then later the Queen of England. Her reign has been on since 1952, meaning a whopping 69 years, making her the longest monarch in the history of the United Kingdom.

So long as the discussion is about Edward VIII, his ties with Hitler have been under the scanner forever. His German friends were another reason for the British family to not like his brand-new bride. The British intelligence was not convinced about Simpson’s motives. They were skeptical if she was passing information from Edward VIII to the enemies. But Edward III was not the only one linked to the Nazis. Did you know that Prince Harry was clicked sporting a Nazi uniform at a costume party for which he apologized soon after?
