Deema

At least twenty vampires paced the sidewalk. Payson had ordered everyone in the building to remain inside. Officer Charges, already outside, was told to drive his car up and down the street telling pedestrians to stay inside until an all clear was given and not to get out of his car no matter what. Still Deema’s heart dropped as two young men refused to follow orders and were quickly set upon by two of the vampires.

Payson stepped next to her. “What do we do?”

“We’ll have to fight.” They’d not survive. There weren’t enough fighters of light. She sent a telepathic message to Earin. Hopefully, he could arrive in time.

“I’ll have to let my presence be known,” Agatha said, approaching them in her true form. “I’ll have to fight with magic, and I cannot do that as a dog.”

Shayna was going to kill Deema herself if anything happened to the witch. “I’m hoping it won’t come to that. Isn’t there any magic you can do from in here?”

“I can do a lot, but it will alert them to the presence of a witch.”

“We have to do something,” Marshal said. “People are dying. What would Shayna do?”

“Whatever needed doing.” Deema glanced at Agatha, preparing to tell her to use her magic.

Shayna and Pierce appeared behind the witch. Deema had never been happier to see anyone than in her life.

“Well,” Mary Ann said from behind the reception desk. “You folks must have forgotten I was here, because you’re spilling all your secrets. I’m not the only one in the room with eyes to see and ears to hear.” She motioned her head toward a couple of men brought in for drunkenness. They watched the proceedings with wide eyes. “Now, them…they probably won’t remember a thing once they sober up.” She stood and joined the faeries. “But me, I don’t forget anything.” She raised a finger and pointed at the clock. “No matter how much time has passed.” The clock’s hands spun so fast they were nothing more than a blur.

“You’re a witch?” Agatha’s mouth fell open.

Mary Ann smiled. “Yes. We’ve devised a spell to keep our identities secret even when using magic.”

“We?” Agatha moved slowly toward the desk. “There are more?”

“A handful, but yes. We went into hiding over a century ago, choosing to stay out of this fight. But the faeries seem to have brought the fight to us.”

“Which side will you choose?” Deema put her hand on the hilt of her sword.

“Relax. We practice white magic. Those who practiced dark are long gone. We made sure of that.”

Agatha’s eyes widened to learn she wasn’t the last of her kind as she’d thought. “With a group of us, we’ll be a formidable force.”

“I’m not making any promises other than that I will speak with the others.” Mary Ann returned to typing on her keyboard.

Deema glanced at Shayna. “Have you looked outside?”

She turned to the door, her features settling into a hard mask of anger. “We need to get rid of them.”

“Agatha wants to fight.
