EXPERIENCING TEXTURAL PALETTES
On your quest to deepen your knowledge and experience of texture, contemplate the many ways nature creates textural palettes. In my Book of Color, I discussed four color palettes straight from nature—The Garden, The Seascape, A Walk in the Woods, and “Fresh Enough to Eat.” These four groups, along with a fifth category comprising the seasons, could easily define textures as well. I encourage you to make a list in your notebook of what these categories mean to you in terms of texture. In a stream of consciousness, jot down impressions of soft, hard, light, and heavy textures.
The Garden As you walk in the sunlight on a winding brick path, with moss and johnny jump-ups softening the cracks, grass, ivy, and delicate daffodils contrast with the rich brown soil. There are vines, stems, bulbs, and blossoms, rose petals and geraniums, peonies, and foxgloves surrounding a small marble cherub fountain and birdbath. Edith Wharton believed the three elements of the gardens were marble, water, and perennials—a reflection pond, a marble statue of an angel, and blossoms everywhere.
