Will the Real Fauci Please Stand Up…

The internet erupted when some sleuth discovered a C-SPAN interview with Dr. Fauci from 2004. I thought it might be interesting to confront him with his own words, indeed, with his own televised words.

So when Fauci appeared once again before the HELP Committee on September 14, 2022, I decided to play the forty-second video of the C-SPAN interview. The problem was that Patty Murray, the far-left senator from Washington State, had created a rule banning video—unless, of course, it was her video. My staff warned me she might try to sabotage my presentation.

I decided the best plan was to ask for forgiveness, not permission. My strategy was to start the video before beginning my remarks. I had my staff put my iPad on the desktop in front of me, direct the microphone toward it, and push play. My hope was that the video would be finished before the Democrats complained. As luck would have it, Murray had stepped out, and Bob Casey from Pennsylvania was filling in—and not fast enough on the trigger to stop me.

Casey recognized me for my questions. My staff immediately set the iPad down and hit play.

The C-SPAN video clip began playing:

News Anchor: But she has had the flu for fourteen days. Should she get a flu shot?

Dr. Fauci: Well, no. If she got the flu for fourteen days, she is as protected as anybody can be, because the best vaccination is to get infected yourself.

News Anchor: And—

Dr. Fauci: If she really has the flu, if she really has the flu, she definitely doesn’t need a flu vaccine—if she really has the flu.

News Anchor: She should not get it again?

Dr. Fauci: She doesn’t need it, because it is the best—it is the most potent vaccination is getting infected yourself. [End of video clip.]1

Senator Paul: This is an ongoing question. And, you know, we have had ever-evolving opinions from you, Dr. Fauci. Currently, antibody surveys show that 80 percent of children, approximately 80 percent of children have had COVID.

And yet there are no guidelines coming from you or anybody in the government to take into account their naturally acquired immunity. You seemed quite certain of yourself in 2004, but in 2022 there is a lot less certainty. One of the things that we also know, after looking at this for two to three years, is that the mortality from COVID is very similar, if not less than influenza.

So when we look at this, we wonder, you know, why you seemed to really embrace basic immunology back in 2004, and why you seem to reject it now.

Dr. Fauci: Well, I don’t reject basic immunology, Senator, and I have never denied that there is importance of the protection following infection.

However, as we have said many times, and as has been validated by the authorization of the—by the FDA through their committee and the recommendation by the CDC through their committee, that a vaccination following infection gives an added extra boost. And that film that you showed is really taken out of context.
