Chapter Eleven

“JURO SAYS WE HAVE four nights to get him back to Malibu before things get truly bloody.”

Robbie gave her a worried look. “Including tonight?”

Cyn shook her head. “No. The countdown apparently starts when Mathilde knocks on the gate in Malibu. Juro’s expecting her to show up tomorrow night, so that’s night one. But our planning has to include enough time for Raphael to fly back home.” She set down her cup of coffee and wandered over to the open sliding glass door, feeling the warm breeze off the Pacific and trying to picture what was going on all those miles away in Malibu.

Robbie came up and stood next to her, arms crossed over his substantial chest, the skull of his Army Ranger tattoo gleaming on a bulging bicep. “All right. Look what we’ve done already. We’ve gone dark so deep and so fast that they never even knew we were here, much less that we still are. We’ve already figured out the general area where they’re hiding Raphael, and by this time tomorrow, we’ll know even more. We’re close now, Cyn.”

She managed a forced smile that probably didn’t fool him. “I guess we’d better get started then. We’re supposed to meet Turner at 8:30 tonight, but I want to check things out before then. All I know about the place we’re meeting him at is that it’s a bar. I want to know how big, how busy, how loud the music is . . . the usual.”

“It’s a little early for cocktails, but I’m game.”

“Okay, let me grab a backup weapon, but then I’m ready.”

“You know this is probably going to turn out to be a cop bar, right?”

“I figured as much, why?”

“Just saying . . . they’ll spot every weapon you’re wearing two minutes after you walk through the door.”

“Good. Then maybe they’ll leave me alone.”

“Try to remember this is just a reconnaissance, Cyn. We’re only there to take a look around in advance of tonight’s meeting, so be nice.”

“I’m always nice.”

Robbie’s laughter followed her down the hall.

THE BAR WAS less than a mile from the Waikiki substation in Honolulu. Cyn didn’t know which office Turner worked out of, but it made sense that the murders would have occurred near Waikiki Beach, because it was the hub of tourist activity on the island. Vampires weren’t stupid about trolling for their victims. Tourists had a tendency to drink a lot of alcohol, which made them less inhibited and ready for a little wild adventure on their vacation, no matter how sane and sober they were back home.

Robbie eschewed the bar’s parking lot for a public lot nearby, not even blinking at the exorbitant hourly rate. He found a spot on the first level, and backed in for a quick getaway. Cyn figured he didn’t even have to think about stuff like that anymore. It was second nature by now.

They walked the half block to the bar, Cyn feeling slightly overdressed in her black combat pants and boots, and the short black jacket she wore to conceal her weapons.
