Chapter Eight

Cole

CADE WAS asleep, his head in Cole’s lap. He ran his fingers through Cade’s curls, over and over, in an attempt to soothe himself, to convince himself Cade was really there. His head was still spinning with all the information Cade laid on him earlier. The only thing making even remotely sense was how much Cade meant to him.

“Are you alright?”

Cole glanced up, meeting Grace’s concerned eyes. He nodded and glanced back down at Cade’s face. He felt the couch dip as Grace sat down next to him.

“You’re not,” she said.

He sighed. “No. Did you honestly expect me to be?”

“Not really,” she said, shaking her head. “But I need you to promise me something.”

Cole glanced up, frowning at the serious expression on her face.

Grace’s voice was thick with emotion when she said, “Please, don’t leave my brother.”

He blinked at her for a moment before he managed to ask, “Why would I leave him?”

Grace looked down at her hands. “There’s still a lot you don’t know. But you have his heart, Cole. Don’t break it.”

Cole didn’t know what to say to that, so he just nodded. A groan made him glance down at Cade who was blinking his eyes and mumbling under his breath. Something about a needle and a Ferris wheel. He helped Cade sit up. He had bed hair and it was all Cole’s doing.

“How are you feeling?” Cole asked, taking in Cade’s pale face.

Before Cade could answer, Shadow walked into the living room, saying, “My patient is awake. How’s the pain?”

“Not as bad as I thought it would be,” Cade said, his voice rough. “We need to go to Seattle. That’s where Richard is.”

“Isn’t this where the CIA is supposed to step in?” Cole asked, looking between Cade and Shadow.

Shadow shook his head, raising his hands as he shrugged. “Don’t look at me. I’m just here to keep Cade safe.”

“You don’t have to come but I need to go. I need to stop him. Preferably before he goes after my family,” Cade said to Cole. “I didn’t leave everything behind just to have him kill them anyway.”

Cade looked at Cole with pleading eyes. Facing off with an arms dealer on your own was a bad fucking idea any given day, but Richard also wanted something from Cade. Cole would never let him go alone. He reached for Cade’s hand. “Okay. But we do it my way.” Cole glanced around at his brothers. “We do it the Black Raiders way.”

“Thank you,” Cade said.

Cole smiled and squeezed Cade’s hand.

“We can’t fly. He’s got people everywhere. Especially now that he’s already lost me once. We’re gonna have to drive to Seattle,” Cade said.

“Not necessarily.”

“What did you do?” Cade crossed his arms over his chest, wincing as the move must’ve pulled at his stitches.

“I may or may not have an airplane stowed away somewhere,” Cole said, a smile playing on his lips.

Axel shot out of his seat and pointed an accusing finger at him. “You stole a thirty million dollar military aircraft? You crazy bastard.
