Arabella

It’s funny how fast a month can fly by, Arabella thought, and how much can change in just four weeks. A month ago, walking into the hospital for her check-up, she was a happily married woman, safe and secure in the arms of a man who loved and trusted her.

Now, as she returned for her visit, she was a woman in exile, shamed and humiliated, forced to take up residence in the apartment where her secret baby and his nanny had stayed hidden.

On that fateful night, when everything had collapsed around her, Nadia had broken protocol out of desperation. Her mother had had a stroke, and she’d needed to go to her urgently. Arabella understood that the younger woman had had no other recourse but to bring Oshun to her home and didn’t hold it against her.

With Nadia away tending to her mom, it was difficult for Arabella to manage a baby on her own while dealing with her heartache. This was the first time she’d ever been alone with Oshun. From the time he was born in France, she’d always had someone with her. Her mom and extended family in France and then Nadia when she returned to the U.S.

Now she needed to rely on solely herself. Arabella never went into the office anymore. She worked remotely with the cameras off so that no one would notice she was conducting meetings with a sleeping baby on her lap.

In some small way, she was even secretly relieved by the revelation, however: her guilty secret was out in the open; there was no more need for her lies and subterfuge.

But Forrest, he had been furious, stunned, utterly betrayed. Every time she thought about the way he’d found out, she groaned. She’d meant to tell him, she swore, but fickle fate had snatched that opportunity from her grasp, and now she was paying the price. Not only did Forrest not want to talk it out, but he also didn’t even want to see her. Waking up to that reality every morning cut like razor blades. Over the past month, she’d gone by the house to talk to him, but he was never home. Not even on his days off.

Her number, she suspected, was blocked because every time she called him, her calls went straight to voicemail and he never replied to her texts.

As she parked near the hospital entrance, she spotted a car roll past, one that looked suspiciously like—yes, it was Forrest’s. As luck would have it, she’d stopped near the staff area, near enough to watch as he parked, opened the door, and exited.

Her heart thumped in her chest; she found herself placing her hand over it as if that would slow it down. He looked so handsome, so perfect, his face unlined and calm, unlike the storm that had been brewing the last time he’d scornfully told her to get out. She longed for him, felt the urge to talk to him, even though she knew he’d refuse her once again.
