ANGEL HEARD THE UNWELCOMING screams of those being tortured. Slowly opening her eyes, she saw the familiar stone cell that Qinetic used for his prisoners. Sitting up, she leaned up against the stone wall, wrapping her arms around herself in an attempt to fight off the bitter chill. She couldn't help but wonder if this time she would be leaving. She could hear Qinetic’s cheerful humming getting closer. “There you are!” he said with the widest, twisted grin she had ever seen.

She let out a faint sigh, pushing herself to her feet. Thankful she hadn’t been chained to the wall this time. Before she had a word to say anything, he embraced her, nearly breaking her spine. He pulled away, still holding her arms as he stared into her eyes. She swore she could see a glint of happiness in his dark, cold eyes. “You gave me Duke Greth,” he said, unable to hide the excitement in his words. “And Abagail!”

“Um,” Angel said before he hugged her tightly again. “You’re welcome?” Angel said.

“Give the poor girl some breathing room,” the nameless goddess said. “She has had such a busy night.”

“Your gift killed me,” Angel snapped at her. No longer caring what happened to her, all she cared about was seeing Lily one last time.

A wicked grin touched the goddess’ lips. “My gift killed you?” she said, her words a false sweetness. “Greth was your only target, Abagail was never on the table for you to kill. That was my gift to Lily.”

“Is she here?” Angel asked, a small piece of her hoping that if they both died, she might be able to see her one last time.

“Lily’s soul doesn’t belong to Qinetic,” the goddess answered. “Your soul; however, is still waiting to be claimed.”

“Why am I here?” Angel asked.

“You don’t enjoy our little chats?” the goddess asked. “The oracle is going to need help, and soon. You and Lily will be there to assist Jera when the time comes.”

“She is locked away in the king’s dungeon,” Angel protested. “You can’t expect us to take on the entirety Kyiosu’s army.”

“You?” the goddess countered. “Of course not. There will be a distraction that will help thin the numbers for you.”

“When is this going to happen?” Angel asked, starting to feel frustrated.

The goddess let out a soft laugh. “Have you forgotten already?” she said, a touch of sadistic pleasure in her words. “We can’t control mortals. All we can do is push them in the direction we want them to go. Time’s up.”

Angel felt herself beginning to sink into the cold, stone floor until it consumed her completely. The goddess walked out of the cell, Qinetic following close behind her. “Does this mean King Kyiosu will soon be added to my... collection?” he asked, sounding almost childish with hope.

She only smiled, ignoring his questions as she opened Rylis’ cell door. He sat up against the wall, not looking up at her as she entered. “Rylis,” she said in a sickly-sweet tone.

He lifted his head, his eyes devoid of hope as he stared into hers.
