Chapter 9
After arguing with Crispin for nearly ten minutes, Lyra finally sat back and blew out a breath. Talking to that man was like talking to a wall. Heâd insisted on going back to his place lest the warlock figure out who she was and track them there, but sheâd argued she had potions and could protect them better at hers. He really hadnât wanted to, but heâd finally relented.
They circled her block twice before coming to a stop three blocks away and parking in an abandoned warehouse parking lot frequently used by commuters. There were plenty of other cars in the lot so Lyra wasnât too worried about anything happening to her car, but the thought of something happening to them once they started walking kept playing in the back of her mind, setting her teeth on edge.
Poe kraaâd and flapped his good wing a time or two when she lifted him out of the backseat, but he quickly settled down, almost as though he knew she was trying to help â which was a good thing because her dislike of birds was making it difficult enough to be this close to him when he was calm. If heâd been flapping around and causing a scene, she wouldnât have been able to carry him the short distance to her apartment building.
The sun had started to set, making the streetlights kick on as they walked. Their hum and buzz as they warmed up and illuminated the concrete planters sitting under each of them made Lyraâs nerves thrum with anxiety even more.
Crispin seemed to feel it, too, because he looked all around them every few steps, his shoulders tensed, and brows furrowed. Lyra hated being this exposed. She gritted her teeth as she listened as hard as she could, her feet moved at the fastest clip they could manage without flat out jogging. She didnât want to alert anyone that something was going on, or risk the warlock driving by and noticing them because they were running.
They quickly came upon the first alley opening and their steps slowed. So far, theyâd had the buildings to their left, creating a sense of protection on that side, leaving them the street on their right to watch. But now with the alleyway fast approaching, anyone or anything could be hiding in its dark depths. Crispin glanced down at her and quirked an eyebrow, silently asking what she thought. At least the man was smart enough to know where the danger lay.
Lyra passed him Poe â the bird remained blessedly quiet â and switched sides with him, putting him near the street and her near the alley. She kept her hands hanging loose at her sides in case any neighbors watched, but let the words for the incantation that brought her spheres to life hang on the edge of her tongue, ready to call them forth in an instant.
Crispin tucked the raven in the crook of his right arm, careful of his wing, and then placed the palm of his left gloved hand at the small of her back.
