Chapter 31

“Hey, it’s morning. Want some coffee?”

Logan’s eyes fluttered open to see Hitomi already holding a mug of coffee. He sat up, rubbed his eyes, and looked around as he grabbed the drink from her. “How is everything?”

“Surveillance shows no signs of the Marvels,” Hitomi answered. “Hector and the others are doing routine checks right now. Lauren sent one of the kids, a new Hyena recruit, to scout the block outside the building. So far, everything looks clean. I don’t think that Druid even knew we were gone until hours later.”

Logan nodded. He took a sip from his mug, raised it in appreciation. “Yeah, Charon said he could still hear loud gunfire and explosions from Ellis Island late into the night. That Marvel must’ve looked like a fool shooting at nothing while we just… drifted our way out of there.”

Hitomi sat opposite him on another couch, grabbed a cup on the table, and took a gulp. “We got really lucky last night. You won’t believe how scared I was the whole time we were on the run. I was freaking out from all those zombies in the tunnel, and then discovering another Rhuwa in the statue… and then being hunted by a Marvel, a Druid no less, and dozens of soldiers.”

Logan placed a reassuring hand on Hitomi’s shoulder. “Hey, don’t let it get to you. We’re here. We’re alive.”

“Y-yeah, I know, but,” Hitomi stuttered as she continued on. “There was a different Rhuwa in there, Logan! She looked like her, she acted like her, she spoke like her… she even smelled like her. They had similar memories, similar mannerisms, similar everything… it’s already quite terrifying for me, can you just imagine how it must feel for her?”

“There are so many things we don’t know yet,” Logan told Hitomi. “We’re just piecing together the pieces. Right now, our best hypothesis is that the world’s been gone for some time and the WDS keeps resetting. With each reset, it reboots our lives. That previous version of Rhuwa, and the previous me that Nessa knew… they probably tried what we’re hoping to achieve. They want to stop the cycle and put things back in order.”

“To stop the endless now,” Hitomi whispered. “It seems like the WDS is just trying to keep us in this never-ending cycle of fighting in a post-apocalyptic war. That’s why we have these video game-esque classes and magic abilities.”

Logan winced at the mention of the endless now. “I hate that term… the endless now. It just makes me ponder how long our lives have been toyed with by whoever is behind the WDS. It makes me angry… our whole lives have been manipulated like they were nothing.”

There was a knock on the door.

“It’s open!” Hitomi answered out loud.

Rhuwa entered. She had a hotdog in a bun in one hand and a glass of orange juice in the other. She took a seat right beside Hitomi and began chowing down on her hotdog.

“What are y’all talking about?” Rhuwa asked between bites.
