Chapter Ten

Daniel felt the urgency to forge ahead. He went through Drake’s notes one more time, adding his own comments on the points that, to him, were the most important, and writing question marks everywhere he felt needed further explanation. It was after lunch when he met with Kitteridge, who was also taking a break from those past cases that needed small issues cleared up. Marcus had told both of them to concentrate on that, and so Daniel had given his current case to someone else.

‘What have you found?’ Daniel asked, stepping into the office before Kitteridge answered his knock. He closed the door behind him. The sun was bright on the window and shone in elongated patterns on the woven carpet. The books stacked two-deep on the shelves were old, but immaculate. Like the books in Drake’s study, they were read too often to collect dust.

Kitteridge looked up from his desk, scattered with papers, but none of them had to do with a current case. They were lying half on top of each other, but he always knew where everything was, as long as nobody attempted to tidy them.

‘I see you’re doing the same thing as I am,’ Daniel observed, sitting in the visitor’s chair. ‘Find anything?’

‘Come in,’ Kitteridge said unnecessarily, a touch of sarcasm in his voice. ‘All roads lead to Mile End. That is, all roads that are definitely not leading to somewhere else.’

‘That’s a nonsensical observation,’ Daniel replied. ‘But I know what you mean. Every loose end I found more or less leads there, too, or a nameless place somewhere near Whitechapel, which has to be either the Isle of Dogs or Mile End.’ He leaned forward a bit, resting his elbows on Kitteridge’s desk. ‘My mind keeps coming back to the location of Evan Faber’s killing. Do you think it might have been Erasmus Faber who had the body moved?’

Kitteridge looked puzzled. ‘Who else would care enough to lie about where Evan was killed?’ He frowned. ‘But it doesn’t make any sense.’

‘Whoever is guilty clearly didn’t care about Evan, but he would care about himself,’ Daniel pointed out. ‘Maybe Faber has some kind of connection to Mile End that we don’t know about? Or to Drake’s murder?’

‘Like what?’ Kitteridge said. ‘Are you thinking that young Faber really was guilty? And Drake was on the brink of finding that out? It wouldn’t make any difference. The case is closed. Can’t open it again.’

‘What a mess,’ Daniel observed. ‘You mean Drake got him off, believing him innocent, then discovered his mistake, and was killed to keep him from . . . what? Telling everyone? Would he do that? Drake certainly didn’t kill Evan . . . he was already dead himself! A random killing?’ He shook his head, as if ridding himself of the idea.

‘That’s all rubbish!’ Kitteridge said bitterly. ‘If the killer didn’t know who Drake was, why kill him? That was hatred, Daniel. Personal. And don’t forget that Drake still had his money on him, and a decent coat.
