Life's Hangover

The guys stared as I went through three liters of blood.

“Thirsty?” Jason asked.

I nodded. Yeah, I was thirsty, like I haven’t eaten in days. I remember the feeling from the lean times, but this was a whole new level of thirst and hunger. As if I wasn’t only running low, but had used up my body’s abilities.

Ian glanced at Jason, then me. “Did something happen?”

“Fuck. Ian, stay out of my head.”

“You’re quietly freaking out and drinking way more than you’ve ever needed. It’s very alarming, Mason.”

Dorothea offered the answer I wasn’t willing to give them. “A nice lady came over and rattled the door. I was scared, so I woke Mason up so she could talk because I didn’t know she was a nice lady. Mason sparkles. That’s why I can wake her up. But I couldn’t wake you up because you don’t sparkle. Mommy and Daddy sparkle. Mason is like Mommy and Daddy. So that’s why I can wake her up while she’s sleeping.”

We all stared at her, and Dorothea giggled.

“Nope, that’s it. This is all too weird. I need samples. I need to understand what’s going on.” Jason stood up and waved his hands as if the samples would suddenly appear from thin air.

“I’m good, but you’ll have to ask her if she wants to share.”

Dorothea perked up. “Share what?”

Jason came over to her. “I have a stick with a cotton swab on the end. It scraps the inside of your cheek and takes some cells. Then I put them in a machine and look at them.”

“Can I see the machine?”

“Sure.” Jason held out his hand, Dorothea took it and we all made the short trek to Jason’s lab.

I whispered to Ian as we walked. “He’s great with kids. You should have your family around you, Ian. They want to be part of your life if you’ll let them.”

“I couldn’t leave like you did, and I stopped being able to watch my family grow old and die, generation after generation. Some of them know I’m here, but they are all echoes of people I knew. I see faces I remember, but they aren’t the people I loved.”

“Ian, you’re being too hard on yourself.”

“I’m old, Mason. Maybe I have a few hundred more years in me, but I don’t want to spend it watching those I care about die over and over again.”

“So travel, go see places with Jason. Take some time. No one said you couldn’t take care of your family while you’re doing things. The world is different now. You can literally do both. You don’t have to be here all the time.”

Ian chewed on his lip and shook his head. He could be stubborn, but not this stubborn. I wonder if he’d take it more seriously if the suggestion came from Jason instead.

Once we arrived at the outbuilding that was now Jason’s lab, we waited for Jason to unlock the door with his thumbprint. The outside wasn’t much to talk about, but inside was state-of-the art.
