CHAPTER THIRTEEN

After grabbing lunch in town, the pair headed back to Christie’s place.

“Hey, can we stop at HEB while we’re here? I want to grab a few things.”

“Sure. I could use some lunch stuff for this week, too.” Bryson pulled into the parking lot and they walked into the store. As he headed over to the deli, Christie made her way toward the canned goods aisle. She had passed one aisle when she spotted Stacy’s dad ambling away from her.

“Mister Fredrich!”

He turned toward her, his eyes squinting to see who it was. She strode over to him. “Hi, it’s Christie. Christie Taylor. I was there the other day when you had your attack.”

“Oh yes, of course. Are you one of the medical team?”

She shook her head. “No, I’d brought over some fried pies for the workers. My friend, Orchid lives there now, so I was checking on the progress. I heard that you lived there before.”

“You heard right. What’s that got to do with anything?”

“Well, as you can imagine, my friend Orchid is shaken up about everything’s that’s happened there.”

He didn’t respond, so she continued. “She feels a need, maybe more a want, to see justice done for those—”

His voice was raspy as he spoke. “Leave that to the police. They know what they’re doing.”

“I just figure that we can help if we can find information that may help them. Dwight said—”

“You talked to Dwight?”

She knew she needed to tread carefully here. “Yes. From what he alluded to, it may have been that they were breaking up. That could account for the other person found with Stacy.”

Mister Fredrich grabbed at the nearby shelving.

“Are you okay, Mr. Fredrich? Do you need to sit down?”

“Naw. It’s just this medication they’ve got me on now. Makes me a bit woozy sometimes.”

“You probably don’t need to be out and about on your own. Or at least use one of those scooters.”

He shooed at her like an annoying fly. “I don’t like being cooped up in that house all day. And I can take care of myself.”

Christie suppressed a smile, as he sounded just like her Pop when he had any of his personal freedom taken from him. “Well, how about I help you by at least carrying your basket or getting you a cart that you can hold on to?”

He took a deep breath. “A cart might be good.”

Just at that moment, Bryson came down the aisle, joining them. “Would you please grab a basket for Mister Fredrich? He’s a bit woozy and a cart may be good to carry his stuff.”

“Certainly. You want me to grab one for you, too?”

“Probably wouldn’t hurt. Thanks.”

He nodded and headed back up the aisle to go find a basket for them.

“Mister Fredrich, I truly don’t want to cause you more pain. I’d just like to help you get closure and justice for your daughter. Have they let you know who the other person is yet?”

He shook his head. Staring up at Christie, she saw the pain in his eyes.
