I threw the other Cupcake and packaging back behind the notebook and headed out the door. Without telling Elise where I was going, I stormed through her office, telling her to keep digging and that I would be right back. She seemed confused but I didn't stick around long enough to be sure. She should be used to shit like this by now. I exited into the hallway and cut through the lobby to the parking garage, where I hopped in the S-Class and headed for Karen's house.
I parked in front of her house, got out and began waving my hands in the air like I was bringing a plane in for a landing. Within a minute, my cellphone rang. It was Elson Garcia, Private Eye.
"We've got someone standing in front of the client's house waving his hands like a madman," he said, before I could even get out a hello.
"I know. I'm the madman. Where is your man?"
"I believe he is around the corner. He has eyes on you."
"Send him out. Need to talk."
"You're the boss." Another minute later, from just around the corner, a man exits a blue Ford Taurus and begins jogging in my direction. He's wearing pants and a button-up shirt with the sleeves rolled above his elbows. God knows how long he has been in that car. I would assume there would be shifts, so maybe his just started. It's still early so I doubt it's even cracked a hundred degrees yet. Soon, he probably would have been sitting in the car shirtless and in boxer shorts, cursing my name.
"You the guy?" he asks.
"I'm the guy. How long have you been posted?"
"Since about eight last night. Long shift but I'm fresh. No one has stepped foot in that house on my watch."
"I trust you. I'm Archie."
"Norman. Norm."
Normally I would throw in some awful Cheers joke, but I am not in the mood today. "Need your help with something, Norm."
"You're the boss." I pick the lock and enter the house. Man on a mission style, I begin trashing it. Knocking shit over, throwing things around, breaking everything I can get my hands on in the sparsely furnished house.
"What the fuck are you doing?" Norm asks me.
"I'm the boss. Follow my lead. I have permission from the deceased's parents to be here."
"Gonna tell me what we're looking for?"
"Hidden chocolate."
"Huh?"
"You'll know it when you see it. Just get to thrashin'." When the kitchen is demolished, I move to the living room, which is the easiest room in the house to search. When I'm done there I move to the bedroom. I begin pulling down all her clothes from the closet, opening up shoe boxes, turning out drawers filled with papers and bills. I pull books from her shelve and hurl them to the floor. I grab her mattress and sling it off the bed, patting it down. I do the same with her box spring and that's where I find it. Hidden inside the box spring, put there
