CHAPTER NINE

After she drove Orchid home, Orchid took Christie’s measurements and sent her on her way. Christie then stopped home where she changed into jeans and t-shirt with a plaid shirt on top. She pulled on boots that would work for the barns.

She arrived at the rescue as Lana and some of the volunteers were helping with unloading horses that had been evacuated from a fire. She waved to Lana and let her know she’d come help after she dropped her things in the office.

Upstairs, Alice was engrossed in a spreadsheet. Christie waved and walked into her office where Bob was waiting. “Hey, Christie. I was hoping to connect with you before I had to leave. I just wanted to go over the sponsorship materials again. People can put up banners or signs outside of the barns the day of the gala, but sponsors of the evening will only be in the program and on the slideshow before the gala starts, correct?”

“Yes, we’ll acknowledge the sponsors and those who provide auction items, but it will only be in general. Can I help with anything, or do you have it handled?”

“All under control. We’re even collecting at places around town for those who can’t make it for the day’s activities. It’s a lot of work but I think it’s going to pay off for us.”

“That’s great news. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I have to check in with Alice on some other items.”

He rose and shook Christie’s hand. “You’ve done an excellent job. I don’t know what we’d do without you.” He picked up his coat and left the office leaving Christie alone with her thoughts. She did enjoy working with the rescue but is it where she was meant to be? Orchid’s words came back to her. The first best person is to please yourself. Was she doing that by staying at the rescue or should she really consider the coroner position? Well, none of that mattered now. She walked back to where Alice was working. She looked up and smiled at Christie. “Hi ya. Just wanted to see if there were any updates on the Gala attendees. I think we’re going to be at capacity. Pretty exciting for our first donor event.”

“I agree. Bob says the sponsorships and general donations are good as well. Listen, I wanted to ask about Carol. Have you been in touch with her to see how she’s doing? If we need to, she can certainly bow out of her committee assignment.”

Alice shook her head. “Please don’t do that. She needs that assignment. I think she’s struggling a bit on being her own person besides being a mom. Her face lights up when she talks about her time here. What happened to Carol was foolish. It won’t happen again.”

“How can you say that? I found a bag with peanut butter powder in it. It could have been a lot more serious, even deadly.”

Alice looked like a deer in the headlights. “I didn’t mean—”

“I apologize. We have to take this seriously.
