Kamasta lit a few lamps as evening fell over Kaugatz, but much of the house remained in shadow, as the price of oil had become too expensive for even Leona to waste any. Farakai dropped off two bottles of fine red wine from the vineyards of Chesson after supper, and then Leona had remained in her room, reading reports about the various shortages that were afflicting the island. Some items remained cheap and plentiful, while others were becoming rarer by the day. Her rationing regime was causing much anger, but it was working, and the date when starvation would begin to take hold had been postponed for another month. The more she read, the more she was convinced that she should remain in the background. Farakai had included excerpts of conversations overheard at a depleted marketplace, where one of his agents had been mingling, and it was clear who the vast majority of people blamed for going hungry. The Gunstians, naturally, incurred the greatest amount of anger, but after that it was Leona. While most people had nothing but good things to say about Lahnos Laimos, it was Leona they were blaming for a perception of unfairness in the rationing regime. Wild rumours that the Aucterians in Igatz were receiving more than their fair share of bread and meat seemed to have taken hold, while many were under the impression that Leona was living like a queen in the Dragon Palace, dining nightly with the Governor and laughing about the poverty of the Zamatans.

Was it worth it? Leona had a thick skin, but the reports made for hard reading, and she felt unjustly maligned by those she was doing her best to help. She glanced at the two bottles of wine sitting on her little table, and a sense of guilt settled in her half-empty stomach. She was hardly living like a queen, but she still had the wealth and means to access luxuries that were outwith the reach of most people living in Kaugatz. Should she throw the bottles out? But, what would be the point? Who was she trying to impress?

A soft knock rapped against her door, and it opened.

‘A Captain Jair is here to see you, ma’am,’ Kamasta said. ‘He is waiting in the dining room.’

Leona nodded. ‘Thank you.’ She got to her feet. ‘Could you bring one bottle of wine down to us in a few minutes?’

‘Certainly, ma’am.’

Leona left her room and walked downstairs, hearing no sounds coming from the old study. She entered the dining room and saw the Aucterian officer standing by the long table, wearing a dark cloak over a set of civilian clothing.

‘Good news,’ he said. ‘Lord Rylan has decided not to kill you today.’

‘Or perhaps you are trying to lull me into a false sense of security before you attempt to assassinate me.’

‘I wouldn’t make the effort,’ he said. ‘I would come at a later hour than this, and I wouldn’t bother knocking on the front door.’

She gestured to a chair. ‘Sit.
