CHAPTER 21

Even after eight in the evening the traffic in Salem was still busy. Stop and go. Stop and go. I couldn’t very well close my eyes while I was driving of course. I hadn’t told Pete about the recent vision, and between stops I couldn’t help replaying the sight of the two trailers. Within the pages of supermarket tabloids I’d seen pictures of Darla posing on a huge, canopied bed. Did the bed in the trailer feature a ruffled white canopy above the satin-sheeted mattress? Of course not. That’s silly. It would be a wasted space. I was sure Pete even had photos of the actual bed. Yet in my imagination, young Encyclopedia Brown saw not only a canopied bed within the trailer confines but, nearby, a smiling Darla relaxed in a swan-shaped tub—perky breasts peeking just above rainbow-colored bubbles. Certainly not an appropriate sight for young Master Brown. Maybe I’d tell River about it later, though.

Jenna was waiting for me, shampoo cape in hand, when I arrived. “Take a seat, Lee. Let’s get started.” She ushered me to the pink reclining seat, and in moments her capable hands did their magic with massage and shampoo. By the time we’d reached the blow-drying stage, any tension I’d felt earlier had pretty much disappeared. I closed my eyes, remembering the conversation about Encyclopedia Brown. Pete was right. I did close my eyes like that clever boy detective when I was trying to recall a vision. Like the one I’d seen twice recently—the scene behind the fence at Gallows Hill Park. River had told me that if it happened again, I should try to move closer—to go behind the fence and try to discover just what it was the vision was trying to show me. Now I’d done that. I’d seen Doug and Darla and Paulina together between the trailers. I still need to figure out what it all means.

I hadn’t talked to anybody except River about what I’d seen. Now I’d seen it twice and I knew there was a message for me in it somewhere besides the fairly vague interpretations from Ariel’s dream book—like looking more deeply into a problem or being more objective in my decisions. Could Pete—or anybody—help with this one?

“Penny for your thoughts?” Jenna spoke softly.

I tried to answer her question without divulging too much. “It’s about a dream I’ve had a couple of times lately,” I admitted. “It’s nothing scary. Just a bit of familiar scenery that we’ve used in some of my videos for the station. One of your customers was in it. Paulina Fellows. Buffy Doan told me Paulina was a walk-in. What did you think of her?”

“She was mostly pleasant to talk to. She needed a quick root touch up and blowout. One thing she said creeped me out a little, though.”

“Oh? What was that?” I looked at myself in the mirror.

“We were talking about Darla. She said how much Darla liked being in Salem because when she was in California she’d had a few death threats and that everything was nice and calm in Salem.
