Chapter 9
PC blinked rapidly and gave her head a shake. Dr. McIlwraith still stared from her phone. The color of his eyes was wrong, and his hair was darker. But it was him.
Who on earth would want to kill the State Archeologist? Should she call Dr. DuPree and offer condolences?
She decided against itâthe anthropologist might not be aware of it yet. The detective made her way back to the Possumwood PD. Now, at least, there was a place to begin.
As soon as PC walked in the front door, Annie looked up and said, âPC! Did you see the render?â
âI did. Hard to believe, isnât it?â
âI never met him, but Hiro said he seemed really nice. I donât understandâ¦â She shook her head and buzzed PC through the security door.
PC shrugged as she walked through. âMurder doesnât always make sense.â
She looked around for Tran, but he wasnât in his cube, or visiting any of the workstations. She would text him later. Once she logged into the laptop, she opened her email and printed the render of Dr. McIlwraith. With the image in front of her, she started making a list of people who might have information on the doctor or his schedule the day he died.
Cooper Downing, number one. The assistant should be intimately familiar with his mentorâs schedule. Even if he had no grievance against his boss, chances were that he knew about it if someone else did.
McIlwraithâs co-workers. Had he been acting strangely? Said anything off? Gotten into any feuds?
People from the university where Downing was a grad student. How did he strike people? Any issues there?
She should probably ask Justice if sheâd seen McIlwraith wandering around her property. PC chewed the inside of her cheek. Justice probably would have already brought that up. Did McIlwraith mention something in his Friday afternoon interview with her?
Was it worth contacting Dinah Mae Brown? There was a chance sheâd have spoken with him about Mirabella County historical artifacts while he was in town. Sheâd be eager for any new exhibit-worthy items he uncovered in his dig.
Coffee. Better fill up my mug before I go out and start talking to people. I really should text Tran and see if he is available to go with me.
The security door clicked open and PC heard Tranâs voice. âMaâam. Please. Donât make this difficult.â
âYou have no right! I didnât do nothinâ!â
PC hurried to the corridor and saw Tran coaxing a recalcitrant Justice toward the interview room.
âWhatâs going on?â
Justiceâs head swiveled toward PC. âThank goodness youâre here! Can you talk some sense into this young fella?â
Tran breathed in deeply. âMs. Johnson, we just want to ask you some questions. Itâs routine. We would interview anyone who found a body on their property, isnât that right, PC?â
âOf course. Justice, would you like me to come in and help?â
âSure.â
PC caught up with them and Tran unlocked the door to a small, grey room. Sheâd seen bigger walk-in closets. Justice sat down in a metal chair that was bolted to the floor at the far end.
