Alan had been reluctant to leave. But once it had been decided they would go back to the restaurant they had used a couple of nights ago, Agnes had insisted, telling him they could discuss it all later. “Besides, don't you have a day job?” she had added pointedly.

After he left, Agnes sat down at the table by the window to think it all through once again. She was angry. But more than being angry at the wretched man, she was furious with herself for having had doubts about her lovely father.

It's all down to that awful man, she thought, as she gazed down at the Millennium Bridge beneath her window.

Perhaps Detective Smithers had got it right after all. Maybe there had been a note of hesitation in Harrison's voice when he gave his name to the receptionist. If this man was pulling some sort of confidence trick, it could be that he had many names up his sleeve and, for a split second, he forgot who he was supposed to be that day.

Agnes realised that sitting here alone wasn't doing her any good. She needed to get out, even if it was only to her favourite café on the quayside.
