Haley and Samantha were all but ushered out of Mr. Snow and Mr. Tapper’s office by Mr. Tapper’s glare alone. They rode the elevator back to the main floor in silence, neither of them wishing to discuss her thoughts in front of the liftboy.

Once they reached the lobby, Haley and Samantha stopped to talk.

“I think we should go to the police,” Haley said.

“I suppose you’re right. Do you think we could speak to Officer Bell?” Samantha ducked her head. “I sort of owe him.”

Haley didn’t have a problem with that. They stopped in at the receptionist’s desk, daring Mr. Wallace’s beady-eyed disapproval. Haley straightened to her full height and stared down at him.

“Might we borrow your telephone, Mr. Wallace,” she said firmly. “It’s a local call.”

With no good reason to deny the assistant chief medical examiner, Mr. Wallace begrudgingly obliged. His face tightened when he heard Haley ask the operator to connect her to the police.
