Chapter
Seventeen
I didnât feel like joining the conversation at the dinner table. With socializing, Iâve always been the type of person who would rather be approached than do the approaching. Mom called it my âshy streak.â I called it my âI-donât-want-to-put-up-with-these-people streak.â That is, until I got to know people better like I had Detectives Gomez and Moody. I was more comfortable with them now, so it was easy to meet them for lunch. Part of me would have preferred if Moody hadnât been at Toffinoâs yesterday and just been me and detective Gomez.
But I digress, after Antonio called me out over being here under these unfortunate circumstances, I sensed a wall being put up. They believed Erin did it. Case closed. She may have, but if she didnât, that meant the killer was at that table, carrying on like they didnât kill a person in cold blood several hours before.
I climbed the stairs. Instead of going into John Allenâs office or bedroom or to where Erin was held captive, I stood on the balcony overlooking the bottom floor and the magnificent view of the ocean. My phone informed me it was after midnight. Still no cell phone signal.
The rain outside appeared to be slacking off. That was a relief. It meant we were closer to getting out of here.
I leaned against the balcony railing, cradling the warm mug in my hands, admiring what little I could see of the outside world.
Preacher had gotten John Allen involved with high-stakes offshore investing. The money man made it sound like a straightforward business deal, albeit on the shady side. If it was on the up and up, why did John Allen leave me the sheet with the transactions listed?
The IRS letter to The Cheerful Note could stem from DeeDee stealing money. Cade said she had done it before. It made me think of DeeDee like a cheating spouse. Once they are caught cheating, you might forgive them, but since they have broken that trust, youâre afraid of them doing it again. Did she? Had she asked her dad for money to get the charity out of trouble, and he turned her down? If she faced jail time for tax evasion, then that might give her reason to kill him. The charity was due to get a quarter of John Allenâs estate. Surely that would cover any back taxes due. Were her siblings fine with her, in essence, getting half of the inheritance?
Who had the most to gain? The better question, as far as driving motive, might be who had the most to lose?
If Erin was innocent, how was the murder performed? To this point, everyoneâs location during the time of the shooting was accounted for. Erin was the closest. DeeDee was the next closest. Could she have run from the bathroom where she holed herself up to the office, shot John Allen, and raced back? Besides Louise and I, they were the only people on the upstairs level. When Preacher disappeared from Chris, he could have taken the elevator up, done the deed, and gone back down.
