I sat in my car. I’d watched Bill drive off, but I’d been unable to do so much as turn the key in the ignition. I kept replaying the moment that I had realised the body on the ground was Mark.

Looking back, I was amazed I had been able to do anything but kneel by his side and stare, but somehow I had retrieved my phone from my pocket and called the police, and then shouted loud enough for Ian and his colleague to come out and see what all the fuss was about. It could have been so different. I could have been sitting in my car, trying to comprehend a future without Mark in my life. Instead, he was in the hospital with a couple of stitches and possible concussion. He was already smiling and making his characteristic cutting jokes, although he did look exhausted. He was going to be okay.

I repeated it to myself a couple more times.

He’s going to be okay. He’s going to be okay.

I knew that the person who had attacked Mark was the same person who had killed Sheridan. I was sure of it. I couldn’t explain how I knew, but I was certain. I’d get a lecture off Joe, but I was determined to find who Mark’s attacker, and therefore Sheridan’s killer, was.
