Chapter 20

It took Chris a moment to digest the news about Luke’s aura.

“We need to find that car,” I urged. “Luke is in serious danger.”

“Okay,” he said, as we began walking back towards the car park. “But we’re going to have trouble finding him. While the doctor was looking after you, I checked the map. Based on the direction the merman was going, there are two roads he could have taken, either further into the Lasithi Plateau, or back towards the coast. But both of them connect with multiple other roads, so he could be anywhere. I don’t think we have any hope of finding him. We may as well head back to Heraklion.”

“I managed to get part of the car’s registration number this time,” I said. “But the plate was really dirty, probably deliberately. The first two letters were HK, and I think I saw a 24 at the end.”

“HK is the Heraklion prefecture. It’s a good start, at least. Let’s hope the police show up soon. “

As we hurried down the street, we saw that the street fight had broken up, the brawlers gone, and the crowd dispersed. I shared my suspicions with Chris. “I have a feeling that fight was put on as a distraction to give the merman space to move Luke from wherever he was being held into the car.”

“You think those two men are working for him? That’s a cheery thought. They looked like thugs.”

“Not necessarily. He could have found a couple of locals and paid them. It may well be just him doing all this.”

Chris side-stepped a group of tourists that surged up the narrow street. “That would be preferable,” he said when he joined me again. “I’d rather deal with one bad guy than multiple ones.”

“Our merman doesn’t seem very smart,” I mused as we continued walking back to our car. “I mean, why keep Luke’s phone switched on? Didn’t he realize we could trace it?”

“Well, it’s possible he was aware of the risk, but thought we wouldn’t bother. What if he wanted to create misdirection with those first texts about Luke being in Chania and coming home soon? He guessed that neither we nor Sophia would get the police involved if we believed that Luke was just dealing with a business matter. But that last text about the dog and the keys was very strange. If the merman sent it, what did he mean? Was it some kind of code?”

We’d reached the car park when a wail of sirens sounded in the distance and, before long, two white and blue cars came into view, lights flashing. Chris waved them down and talked with an officer through the open window. In less than a minute, both cars sped away.

“I gave them the plate information,” he told me. “With any luck, they’ll be able to work out who the car is registered to, although…”

“That may take a little time,” I guessed.

“Yep. For now, at least, they’ll put out an alert for a battered white Volkswagen with an obscured reg plate.
