David and Linda entered the office at Marty’s on the Bay. Lily was finishing up the nightly bookwork. “Thank you both for picking up the slack the last couple of days. I know it’s been tough not having Chase here,” Lily said.

“We appreciate you coming in to work with us again this evening,” Linda offered.

“Nice of you to finish up the cash work. We’ll be out of here early tonight,” David added.

“Do you think Chase will be back to work soon?” Linda asked as she took a seat across the office desk from Lily.

“I don’t know how long all of this is going to take. We don’t have enough answers. I don’t suppose either of you has any idea where we might be able to find Annie. She doesn’t answer her phone, and we haven’t been able to catch her at her apartment. We have reason to believe she can help us understand what happened to Ron Castle.” Lily looked up at David.

“I haven’t seen Annie since she dropped us at the ferry after work on Friday,” David said.

“Have you checked with Virgil? She never misses work. She’s very dependable. I assume you’ve checked the café. If she hasn’t been there the past couple of days, I’d be surprised if Virgil didn’t know why.” Linda looked confused.

“I checked with Virgil. She left the café right after I told her about Chase being arrested. She called Virgil later that day and told him she’d need a couple of days off. He hasn’t heard from her since,” Lily said.

“Did you ask Tonia? Maybe Annie told her where she’d be,” Linda said.

“Chase. Did you ask Chase? Annie loves Chase. She would surely be in contact with him. Is he allowed visitors? Can he make phone calls? Surely, she has spoken to him.” David seemed confident.

“There has been no evidence that she has been in contact with him at all,” Lily responded. “I expected her to be at the Bainbridge Island Police Station when we got there the day he was arrested. She didn’t show up. We thought for sure she would be at Kitsap County Corrections once he was moved there. He is allowed visitors. Judy and I went to see him. He’s not doing very well, I’m afraid.”

“It all seems very strange that Annie hasn’t visited him. Do you think something might have happened to her? Do you think whoever killed Ron Castle might have done something to Annie as well?” Linda’s eyes lit up with terror.

“I don’t think there’s any reason to think something bad has happened to her,” Lily said in a calming tone.

“I’m sure Annie is okay. Why would anyone want to hurt Annie?” David added.

“Will you both try to reach her? She might be more likely to respond to one of you,” Lily requested.

“I’ll try right now,” Linda said as she pulled her phone from her apron pocket.

“I left my phone in my locker, but I’ll give it a try too,” David said.

“Annie, it’s Linda Holt from Marty’s. Give me a call when you get this message.
