Chapter 14
Friday morning, Peter found two envelopes stuck under the door. The pale green one matched the other envelopes they'd received earlier in the game. The other, a generic white envelope, had no return address. Clara handed Peter the game envelope and opened the white one herself. She didn't hear a word Peter read, because the words in the other note blocked everything else out.
You don't belong in the game. Drop out, or you'll regret it. Let the family battle it out!
She read the single line over and over again.
"Are you all right?" Peter touched her arm, and she jumped.
She dropped the note and envelope on the counter and covered them with a pile of junk mail she'd been meaning to put in the recycling bin.
"Fine, just fine. What do we know about tonight's game?" She plastered a smile on her face.
He eyed her for another moment before reading the letter a second time. "Dear contestants, after many people in town have repeatedly requested to watch the games, we've found a solution. As a special treat and thank you to the people of Brent Falls, the next game will be broadcast. In order to prepare for such an event, the game will be postponed until Monday. Thereafter games will be played on Mondays and Fridays for the next two weeks. Check your email for links to the rules, and to see a portion of the game being played."
Clara folded up the letter. "Let's hurry and get ready. We might have time to watch a little before we have to leave." He ran off without an argument. Too bad she didn't always have something to get him moving quickly. While he got ready for school, she picked up the threatening note and envelope with a pair of tweezers and slipped them into a small garbage bag, then into her purse. If there had been fingerprints, she hopefully hadn't ruined them.
They sat on the couch and watched the video of a Tetris-like board game.
"I've never played this game before. I wonder if they're going to put us on TV or something. Wow, then I'd be a hundredaire and a TV star. Do you think that's what they're going to do?"
"Maybe."
"Or maybe it will have a giant game board, and we'll have to carry giant heavy pieces around."
"I guess we'll find out tonight." Clara dropped Peter off at school and headed to the police station. She hoped Peter hadn't picked up on her distraction.
The woman at the front desk listened to her story and then called the sheriff. He came out of his office.
"Ah, Ms. Ferguson. Come to confess?"
"No, I didn't. I came to report a threat."
"Come on back. You're one of the people I'd hoped to have a chat with today. We'll sit in my office."
He was not one of the people she'd hoped to talk with today, or any day for that matter.
"Please have a seat and tell me why you're here."
She put the bag on his desk and explained what had happened.
