Mr. Joel came in. There was nothing in his hands. “So, Charlie,” he said genially, “you’re a blasted copper’s nark, are you?”

“I don’t know what you mean, Mr. Joel.”

“Oh yes, you do. We know all about it. You and your stories. Me and my brother, we didn’t bump Mike off; but we don’t like snoopers round our books. We don’t like it, Charlie. See?”

Charlie had plenty of courage. He was five feet nothing but he had done his bit in the 1914 War and could boast his row of medals with the best of them. He rose to his feet and watched closely Joel’s huge figure. He might be able to dodge out of the room when the other made his murderous rush.

“You know what we would do with you in the old days, don’t you? We would throw you out of the window. I’ve seen it done in the auction-rooms. And there weren’t no fare back to town. I’d be more annoyed, Charlie, only I was an effing runner myself once, and I suppose you’re getting paid for it.”

“I don’t want to see the wrong man hang.”

“That’s none of our business. Now clear out before I forget myself, and tell the copper you’re working for that we’ll tear him in half if he interferes with us. Now get.”

Charlie walked out. “Thanks for the tea,” he said.

“I’ve been a runner myself, and in want of a cuppa.”
