The telephone ringing in the sitting room woke Marjorie with a start. She checked the time and realised it would be Rachel wondering where she was. Scrambling into the dressing gown hanging in the wardrobe, she went through. Snores rumbling from the bed settee alerted her to the fact that Edna was still fast asleep.

“Hello, Rachel.”

“Thank God! I’ve been worried sick, Sarah and I have been banging at your door for ages. What’s that noise?” Rachel didn’t pause for breath.

“I’ll pop round and explain. Just a moment.” Marjorie put the telephone down, pocketed the room key and, after checking the corridor was clear, scurried next door where Rachel waited.

Her friend’s eyes opened wide. “You overslept! That’s a first.”

Marjorie hurried inside. “Good morning, Sarah.” Sarah stepped towards her and kissed her on the cheek, frowning at Rachel.

“I told you she probably had a bad night and needed a lie in.”

“You could call it that,” explained Marjorie. “My house guest returned at some unearthly hour and made a terrible din. Once I was awake, we got talking, and the time flew, hence I slept in.”

“At least you’re talking,” commented Sarah.

“I am sorry. Why don’t you two go off and do the walking tour instead of our planned leisurely stroll? I fear it will take me a while to get ready and I need breakfast inside me these days before I can go anywhere.”

“We can’t leave you on your own,” argued Rachel.

“I’m not twelve, dear. Of course you can. We’ll meet up after lunch and I’ll join you for a little outing then.” Rachel opened her mouth to protest. “Don’t argue, Rachel. I will be fine.”

“What was that noise in your room?” Rachel asked. “It sounded like thunder.”

“That, my dear, is Edna Parkinton snoring. At least she had sobered up by the time she got in last night, which was a plus. She’s taken a shine to Horace Tyler, of all people.”

“Watch out, Rachel, you’ve got a rival,” Sarah teased.

“Oh, I’m gutted, but I’ll try to live with the loss,” Rachel mocked. “Men are so fickle, aren’t they?”

“I’m pleased to see you’ve lightened up. Now, off you go, meet me back here at two.”

Sarah took Rachel’s arm. “Come on, mother hen, let’s get you out for a walk.” She winked at Marjorie. “She really needs a run; these river ships don’t offer her a running track and you know what she’s like. A gym and walking track aren’t good enough!”

“Yep, I do need some exercise,” Rachel conceded.

“Come along then, Miss Adrenaline Junkie. See you later, Marjorie.”

Marjorie walked back to her room while her young friends headed towards the stairs and the exit. She sighed. It would have been nice to have gone ashore with them, but she had another project in mind.

Markus the butler walked towards her. “Is everything okay, Lady Snellthorpe? I’ve just seen your companions heading out.”

“I’m afraid I slept in, Markus. Late nights and old age don’t mix.”

“Can I get you anything?”

“Would it be a bother to ask for two
