As soon as I saw the kids were settled and listening to our reader, I hurried out of the room to the back of the store, and Lucy, whose chin was perched on the lap of one of the kids jumped up and trailed after me, her tail flapping wildly behind her.

“Aunt Aggie?” I called to my aunt once I was behind the shelves. She glided over to me, her signature big grin plastered on her face.

“You are a natural with kids,” she said.

“Ah, thanks, but…listen. There is one of the kids, a young girl…”

“The one with the little pigtails? So cute. I saw her,” Agnes said. “Poor thing. She and her mother look like they haven’t eaten in a while.”

“What do you think?” I held up an old children’s book from the box that I charmed earlier to bring luck and love to her little life.

“Looks perfect to me, dear.” Aggie nodded her head.

I stepped behind another row of bookshelves around a corner, book in my hand. Now all I had to do was seal the charm with my intention for our freckled cutie and her mom. As I set the book on the table, Finn jumped up on the table and sat next to it. I laid both of my hands on the cover and Finn gently set his warm paw on top of them. I looked at him, and for the first time I thought I could actually hear him speak.

I was mesmerized as my stare fell deeply into Finn’s. It was as if we were chanting the charm together.
