Chapter Ten

Wednesday was my day off. I’d planned to spend a good part of it writing letters of thanks to people who’d kindly sent us wedding presents.

Over a bowl of cereal and blueberries, I decided I could still do that. Later.

“Any plans for today?” Connor asked as he poured his own cereal.

“Write thank-you cards. If I don’t get those done soon, they’ll hang over my head forever. And end up never getting done.”

“Be sure and thank my great-aunt Alice for the toast rack. It’s a souvenir of her 1973 visit to London.”

I laughed. “Top of my list. Her heart was in the right place, and that’s all that counts.”

“Don’t forget, I told you I have that dinner meeting with the other area mayors tonight. I’ll try not to be too late. Have you told Charles you’re not going to the library today?”

I looked down to see the cat sitting by his carrier, his intense blue eyes fixed on me as though he were saying, Get a move on. When Charles lived in the library, he went to work every day except Sunday. He was still having trouble getting used to the new schedule.

“I love my job,” I said, “and I know you love yours, but as much as I love it, I need some time off now and again. Must be nice to love it so much you can’t bear to take a day off.”

Connor put his breakfast dishes into the dishwasher. “If I had a job where I could take a nap whenever I wanted and people fussed over me constantly, I might not want to miss a day either.”

“Sounds like your job when you’re at home,” I said with a smile.

“Love you,” he said, as he went to get his things.

“Love you more,” I called after him.

Once Connor had left, I tidied up the kitchen and then showered and dressed. I wanted to have a chat with someone, but I decided not to phone ahead. Better, I thought, to catch my prey unawares.

I arrived at the Ocean Side Hotel at nine o’clock, hoping a person on vacation would not yet have gone out for the day. One woman stood behind the reception desk, dealing with a guest, while a family of four, surrounded by a mountain of luggage, waited not terribly patiently to be seen to.

“Tyler,” the man said, “if you do that to Madison one more time, I’m going to leave you behind.”

“Yeah!” six-year-old Tyler shouted. “More vacation!”

“Have you no sense?” the woman snapped at her husband. “All you’re doing is encouraging him.”

“Pardon me for trying to be a responsible father,” he replied.

While the parents glared at each other, Madison, all of five years old, stuck her tongue out at her brother.

“Mom!” he wailed.

I decided to have a quick look around for the person I was after before asking the receptionist to make a call to the room. I headed for the restaurant.

“Good morning,” the hostess said. “Table for one?”

“No, thank you. I’m looking for someone. Okay if I have a peek?”

“Certainly, Mrs.
