Two of McDonald’s ingredients had rich histories in the burial process. For example, gypsum was a common preservative used in the Roman Empire that acted as a drying agent by absorbing liquids leaving the corpse.50 Furthermore, molasses also had long been used as a preservative of both food and corpses.51 As a sugar byproduct, it reduced the amount of bacteria that grew on the body’s surface, absorbed moisture, and left behind dehydrated tissues with a texture similar to that of beef jerky.52 However, for families looking to make more of a statement about their social status and offer additional protection for the corpse, cement ushered in a new era in funerary technology, and the burial vault became the more secure method of body disposition for the well-to-do.
