The same evening, Maria went to call on her friend Sonia. They had known each other all their lives and had shared music lessons at Maria’s house. Now, Sonia was respectable and married. With a gentle, patient demeanour and a nicely rounded figure, she had caught the attention of an ambitious young clerk called Roberto Bolero, and they now had a six-month-old baby boy. Maria had to sit and admire the baby for a good half-hour – how very strong he was, how well he was sitting up, how he was taking to solid food – before she could get around to asking her question.

‘Sonia?’ she started, tentatively. ‘You know how fond I am of my father.’

‘Yes, and how you run rings around him! You are always making him do what you want.’

Maria laughed. It was good for him, kept him on his toes.

‘Well, this time there’s something I want to do for him. You know that your Roberto works for Dr Marsat, the lawyer?’

‘Ye-es…’

‘And you know Marsat is involved with the Anti-Reform Party?’

‘Ye-es…’

‘I need to find out when they are next meeting. I am convinced it will be at Marsat’s offices. Could you find out from Roberto if that is the case, and let me know when it’s happening? I’d like to know who they all are and what they are plotting. It’s important – it will help my father so much to know. For a story in the paper. Do you think you could do that for me?’

‘I don’t know, Maria. Roberto needs to be careful. What if Marsat found out he’d passed on information? He could lose his position there!’

‘Oh, it wouldn’t come to that. No one will know.’

‘But they might! What are you planning, anyway? You’ve got that look in your eyes; you’re up to something.’

‘Nothing! I just need to know when the meeting is. You don’t have to worry about anything. It will be fine. Please, Sonia?’

Eventually, and reluctantly, Sonia agreed to send her a message, but only if Roberto agreed. Maria felt a familiar pang of guilt. She had always been able to persuade her friend to do anything she asked. Sweet Sonia, who was so willing to help, and who never questioned her motives.
