Foster walked slowly back towards the spot where he’d left Smitty, his hands up, trying to come up with a plan.

Smitty was gone.

“He must have untied himself and run off,” he said. How was it possible for him to do that so quickly? “This is where I left him. You can see the marks where I dragged him there.”

In the darkness of the bush, a horse whinnied softly.

Baxter threw Millie to the ground and raised his gun towards the sound.

“Who’s there. Come out or I’ll shoot.”

He took a step towards the bush. “Smitty? Are you there?”

A crack. Smitty came rolling down the slope from the bush, still tied up and gagged, signalling something with his eyes.

Baxter fired twice into the bush and then dug into his pocket for a fresh cartridge.

A loud band echoed along the lagoon. Baxter clutched his chest, astonished, and then collapsed backwards.

Millie crawled towards him.

“He’s alright. It went through his shoulder.”

“Who’s there?” asked Foster. “Come out, please.”
