Two days later, weâd stalled out on our investigation, though I had two days off after my shift, and I would be trying to find the boat that capsized and look for clues in the area where it happened. But when I got to work that night, Mr. Forest called me to the conference room in the Guest Services building. He said Gloria could come as well.
When we entered the building, Jayden and Nora were holding the elevator for us, so we all rode up together. âWell, what is your dad going to say?â I asked him.
Jayden smiled. âThe detectives are going to be there to discuss what theyâve found so far. And Dad wants us to share our information with them.â
âAh, okay.â I exchanged a glance with Gloria, and I could tell by her expression she knew exactly what I was thinking. Why should we do all the work and turn our hard-earned information over to them?
And the way her expression shifted right after, I knew she was thinking that we should do it to protect the park from closure and, you know, for the greater good.
Oh, yeah.
I didnât know why sleuthing made me so territorial, but it was clearly fulfilling some deep-seated need for excitement that had been missing from my life for some time. I wasnât sharing what Zoe and Snow told me though. Obviously they wouldnât believe me anyway.
Theyâd probably haul me off to the nearest psychiatric facility.
âHi, Mr. Forest, Mrs. Forest, Detective Towers,â I greeted everyone as we entered the conference room. They all stood to greet us and shake our hands.
âCan I get yâall anything?â Mrs. Forest asked as we all settled around the table. She had one of those old-money Charleston accents that sounded so gracious and refined, like sipping a mint julep on an antebellum porch.
âCan you get some water from the fridge in the lounge?â Mr. Forest asked.
âSure, honey. Just a moment.â She cast her beaming beauty-pageant smile around the table and then went off to procure the refreshments. I had a feeling sheâd bring back more than just water.
âIâm going to turn this over to Detective Towers.â Mr. Forest gestured to the detective, who looked overheated in her navy pantsuit. I wondered where her partner was, Mr. Powers, but I wasnât a big fan so I wasnât missing him or anything. I was sure Shelly Towers could handle this case on her own just fine.
âThank you, Mr. Forest.â She nodded at him and glanced around the room as she delivered her report, âAs you know, we recovered Kevin Morrisâs body from under the bridge. The preliminary report is back from the Medical Examiner, but weâre still waiting on the tox screen and the full official report. What I can tell you is that Mr. Morris did drown.â
There was a collective sigh of relief as we all assumed that eliminated the possibility of him being murdered.
âHowever,â she continued, âthe ME found significant abrasions and contusions consistent with blunt-force trauma, so itâs
