TWENTY-FOUR
In the morning, when Abbie left Flynn’s house for her job as hall monitor, she heard baby Moroni stirring, but the rest of the house was still in deep slumber. She had managed to get some rest between some really weird dreams. In the way that happened in dreams, she remembered being in places and seeing people that were impossible. Yes, there had even been some flying involved. Abbie had glided over the small temple in Colonia Juárez and then landed outside her house in Utah. She had watched Bowen and his cohort in the flannel shirt rifle through her office, looking through her dad’s old research.
Was that why Bowen and his friend had broken into her place last year? Had they been looking for something of her dad’s? Some research he’d done long ago? They had looked through her study and everyplace else where books and papers would logically be kept, every place except the attic. They hadn’t looked in the attic.
She turned into the parking lot at the high school for another fun-filled day on the trail of the Weber High locker thief. Before she walked through the doors of the institution of teenage learning, she texted Clarke to see if any progress had been made on Caleb Monson or the ME report on Bryce Strong. Henderson had taken over her cases, but he hadn’t specifically prohibited her from asking about them.
Clarke didn’t respond. It was early, even for him.
Abbie checked in with the principal and the security guard. There hadn’t been any robberies overnight. The dance team arrived just when Abbie did and began practicing a routine in the gym. Abbie watched the dancers practice their jump splits while their coach clapped the beat. In a wave, the girls flew into the air, touched their toes, and then landed in splits on the ground, jazz hands stretched to the sky in victory. It looked painful, despite the girls’ toothy smiles.
Her phone rang. She’d forgotten to turn it to vibrate. The dance coach shot her a dirty look. Abbie quickly stepped into the hallway.
“Good morning, Clarke!” She was happy he’d called. She wasn’t sure if Henderson was making his life difficult. She hoped not.
“Taylor, we do know more about Caleb. I’m sending you the most recent picture we have of him. Looks like he’s the driver of our white mystery car.”
“Thanks!” Abbie said.
“The other guys have all been reassigned. I’m pretty much the only person following anything up.” There was a loud crash in the background. “Gotta run.”
Abbie glanced at her phone. She tapped the image Clarke had sent.
She recognized Caleb Monson. He was Bowen’s brawny partner from the break-in last year: the man in the flannel shirt. He’d also been the man in the ill-fitting suit at Heber’s funeral. And Clarke had said he was the mystery driver who talked to Bryce Strong at the scene of Heber’s fatal crash.
Caleb Monson might just be the person who connected everything.
* * *
Time passed so slowly at Weber High that Abbie was convinced all the clocks were broken.
