CHAPTER 29

Nibbling daintily on her dragon roll, D’Arcy contacted the Communications and Control Department, put in a request for the recordings of the three calls to 999. D’Arcy knew the protocols, knew she’d need approval, so she decided to call DCI Nix, have him make sure the request was approved in a timely manner.

“Full disclosure here, D’Arcy,” Nix said. “I’ve nothing whatsoever to do with that woman nor whatever flimmin preposterous things she might have got up to. I want that to be known before we go any further.”

“Understood, sir.”

“I’ll demand they fast-track the recordings, send them on to you the moment they’ve retrieved them from the archives.”

“I appreciate it, sir.”

Forty minutes later, when D’Arcy returned from the ladies, she was delighted and a bit surprised to see the files already in her email inbox. There was a message with the files, saying that the calls had been flagged as Concern for Safety calls. There should have been a follow-up with a mental health professional, but that request had somehow gotten lost in the mix. The appropriate department was understaffed and still had not gotten around to sending someone around to administer the care they suspected Evelyn Guilfoyle needed.

A bit too late for that now, D’Arcy mused.

She shot back a quick email.

Please remove the request for Concern for Safety from your list. The individual is now deceased.

Best,

DS Nancy D’Arcy

D’Arcy retrieved a pair of headphones from the bottom drawer of her desk, ran a sanitizing wipe over them, and plugged them into her computer. She had a notebook at hand to write down the details.

She clicked on the file for the first call, dated 21:35 on a Tuesday a few months earlier.

Operator: 999, which service do you require? Police, fire, ambulance?

Evelyn Guilfoyle: I need the police, please.

Operator: Connecting you to the police. Hold the line.

(Call is transferred to the PSNI)

PSNI Operator: PSNI emergency. How can I assist you?

Evelyn: Can I trust you?

PSNI Operator: ...Of course, ma’am. We take all calls seriously. Can you please tell me your name?

Evelyn: I won’t tell you my name until you promise me you’ll send someone over. And that it won’t be blabbed about all over the internet and news.

PSNI Operator: I understand your concern, ma’am, but we need to gather some information first. Are you in any danger? Can you describe what you’re seeing?

Evelyn: I’ve seen...there are these strange lights in my back garden. Three of them. They’re moving in ways that no normal aircraft on God’s green earth could. They can’t be anything but UFOs.

PSNI Operator: ...UFOs, ma'am? Have I heard you rightly?

Evelyn: Aye. That’s what I said. UFOs. They do exist, you know. I read all about it, seen the videos. And there are three of them here now.

PSNI Operation: Could the lights not be something else, ma’am? Could you not be mistaking these UFOs for something else? Couldn’t they be lights from the planes flying in and out of Derry Airport, Eglinton? Perhaps a light from one of the neighbors? A helicopter, even?

Evelyn: No.
