I arrived at Somerton’s townhouse in the middle of Ampney and, when I tapped on the door with the brass knocker, I couldn’t help seeing that it was some kind of Pan-like creature’s head. Rather sinister, and a world away from a WELCOME mat.

The door was opened by a maid, and I was relieved to see a clean and entirely ordinary looking home, with just the right about of decoration, furniture and entirely local taxidermy (a squirrel, a fox, a rook and a fanged hedgehog).

‘If you’ll wait here,’ said the maid, ‘I’ll just let Mrs Somerton know you’ve arrived.’

The corridor was lined with a long Persian rug, and on one side, there was an Indian tapestry, and on the other, a narrow hall table, decorated at its corners with golden sphinxes; but it wasn’t that, or the needlework that caught my eye. There was a Japanese etching which was much more arresting and I swayed my hips this way and that, trying to work out exactly what the couple was up to.

‘Ha! I regularly spend stolen moments trying to do that myself,’ said a voice from above, ‘I won’t be two ticks. Just putting some lippy on!’ Two storeys up, there was a silver-haired head looking over the balustrade. The maid returned, and said that madam would be down presently, before unceremoniously plonking my hat and jacket on the Chippendale, possibly in response to the extended time I’d taken looking at the etching, trying to work out the angles.
