CHAPTER FIVE

It took some time to gather up all the information, double-check that all of it was clearly labeled, and send it over to Orion. As I locked up my office and walked back into the range, I wondered if Coach Natasha had actually blackmailed anyone else. That would explain why she held such a high-level position if she was so difficult to work with. I let Moo enter the range first then followed him in.

“Di!” Minx called out from the line. “I’m right in the middle of a scoring round—could you show Vlad where we keep the superglue?”

“No problem.” I waved him over to follow me to a door in the corner of the range near the door I had entered. I used my key to unlock it then flipped on the lights as Moo trotted around the room to sniff and inspect all the smells. I pulled out the superglue and handed it to Vlad as he entered the room.

“Thank you. Do you have… like to melt?” He flicked his thumb over an imaginary lighter.

“Sure.” I pulled out a lighter and passed it over.

He moved the lighter to the serving string. When the flame hit the loose end, the string melted, balled up, and raced back to the bowstring, where he pressed the metal on the head of the lighter against the molten blob to press it into the string and seal the end. “I saw you talking to Shark. You should be careful. He’s not what he seems.”

“Really? What’s he like?”

He uncapped the glue and let a drop fall onto the string then deftly rubbed it in with his fingers. “He thinks he is so cool. What do you call them here? Mafioso? He gambles, does drugs, and runs with a group of gangsters, but he is not so tough. He does it to impress the ladies.” He sneered in disgust.

“Isn’t he worried about drug tests?” Archers were often subjected to drug tests at international and national tournaments.

“He knows what he can take and when and not get caught. He thinks he is better than everyone. Coach Natasha covered for him.” He blew on the string and tapped a finger on the glue to see if it was still tacky.

“How?” I checked over my shoulder to see if we were still alone.

“She lets him know when random drug tests are coming up and did something with his gambling debts. I’m not sure if she paid them off or what.”

“Wow, national archery coach must pay a lot better in Bordistan than here.”

“No, her husband is an important man in military supplies. They have a great deal of money. Whatever she did, he no longer had those men bothering him. She really held that over him after that.”

“When was that?”

“A year ago. I have to go practice.” He grabbed his bow and started to leave.

I stepped in front of him. “Oh, but I hear that everyone had a problem with Coach Natasha.”

He chuckled. “Yes, of course, except her little lapdog Matt.
