Chapter 12

My heart raced as I looked around the hotel room. It was actually a lot more lavish than I’d expected: we entered into a main living room, with a large couch that looked onto a 40-inch television mounted against the wall. The artwork lining the walls was obviously expensive, and a full-size desk, with a laptop on it, was visible as well. A glass-topped coffee table finished off the room, and the floor-to-ceiling drapes were pulled back, revealing a sliding door leading onto a relatively large balcony offering gorgeous views of the ocean beyond.

As soon as we entered, Mary pulled two pairs of latex gloves out of her purse and handed them to me. “Here, put these on,” she ordered.

I immediately did as she asked; after all, just by being in this room I’d committed a crime, the last thing I wanted to do was leave any actual evidence that I’d been here.

Mary immediately made her way to the open laptop. “Are you sure you don’t want me to go through the computer?” I asked, and Mary glared at me.

“I’m old, not useless,” she replied.

“Fair enough,” I replied, making my way to the bedroom. I wasn’t sure what I was expecting to find, but I figured that was possibly a good thing. If I kept an open mind about things, then I was more likely to pay attention to anything I did notice, right?

I definitely felt a bit creepy and weird going through a dead guy and his wife’s things. And to be honest, after a couple of minutes, I was definitely losing faith that I was going to find anything even remotely relevant to helping us find the killer. After going through the pockets of what felt like the fifth pair of excellent-condition Ralph Lauren slacks, however, I finally felt like I was came across something promising!

There was a part of a note in one of his pockets, with a woman’s handwriting on it.

It read ‘can’t wa’, and the rest of it was ripped off, but if I wasn’t mistaken there was a smudge of lipstick underneath.

“Miki, come have a look at this,” I heard Mary call from the other room. I stuffed the piece of paper into my pocket and made my way to where the older woman was on the laptop.

“I’ve found the name of the man suing Theodore Little. Martin Baker. All the company’s records are here on this computer.”

“Oh!” I said. “It’s too bad we can’t take them somehow.”

“Emily might have her Harry Potter books, but I learned long ago to never leave the house without a thumb drive,” Mary said, triumphantly pulling a small USB stick from her purse. She plugged it into the computer and began moving files over. “I haven’t been able to get a good look at this stuff yet, but it seems like Martin Baker had a good case. Looking over these accounts, I don’t see any superannuation payments.”

“Ok, so we have another suspect,” I nodded. “We should look into Baker for sure.
