Chapter Sixteen

Carme turned to me and I nodded. “Let her in.”

She grabbed the keys. Liam flanked her as she opened the door. Worried the ghosts might try to come in, I held my breath, not that they needed an open door. They didn’t enter. They hovered outside the shop and stared at me expectantly through the window.

Carme locked the door again and I waved our bone collector over. She wore similar clothes to before, black jeans and a dark hoodie. This time, she had a large black duffel bag. She looked rough, like maybe she hadn’t slept or eaten since she’d last been here.

I held a hand out toward the back corner. “Would you like to sit?”

She gave a cautious glance around, then nodded.

Moving slowly and carefully like I might spook her, I made my way to the back. Liam went to follow us, and I pointed at the door, trying to shoo him out. He rolled his eyes at me and stayed with Carme at the counter.

“What’s your name?” I asked after we sat. “We’ve been calling you our bone collector.” She gave a snort-laugh and put her bag at her feet.

“I wanted to give you a better name,” Carme said, quite serious.

“I’m not sure if that’s endearing or not.” She held out her hand across the space between us. “Andrea.”

“I’m Amy,” I replied. Her hand was cold and a bit clammy as we shook. “Welcome back.”

“Didn’t think I would be, but…” She reached down, unzipped her backpack and pulled out a skull. She shoved it toward me. “Take it. I don’t want it.”

I tucked my feet up under me and moved back in the chair as far as I could. “We don’t want it either.”

She put it on the floor by her feet then used both hands to dump her bag out. “None of it.” Bones clacked and clattered out onto the rug.

Carme rushed over. “Maybe we want it.” She crouched down for a closer look.

“Carme,” I snapped.

“What? Might be cool in the shop,” she replied. “These all human?” Andrea nodded.

With my feet still tucked up on the chair, I leaned to put a hand between Carme and the pile of bones. “Let’s find out why Andrea doesn’t want them, first. Don’t touch them.”

Carme scoffed but sat down on the rug. Liam joined us and stood behind Carme.

I sat back. “So?”

Andrea let out a long breath. “If this is why things are happening to me, I don’t want them.”

“What is happening to you?”

She chewed her lower lip a couple times. “I’ve been having blackouts. Before you ask, no, it’s not drugs or alcohol. I don’t know when the blackouts are going to hit or why. I just wake up after.”

“Have you seen a doctor?” I asked.

“I don’t think they can help. When I wake up, I’ve written things. At first, it was with whatever was lying around, but then I started leaving out paper and a pen.”

Carme bounced on her butt. “Automatic writing.”

“That would be a good name for it,” Andrea said.
