A couple of days after going to see Peter, Maybelle was helping Helen shine all the silver they had in the shop. It was a terrible job, one that Maybelle didn’t wish on her worst enemy, but at least she knew that by the time they were done, the reward of shiny silver would bring a smile to her face.

“I don’t think the usual polish is going to work on that carving set we got online.” Helen gestured to the carving set that lay on the side of the table they had yet to get to.

Maybelle followed her gaze and nodded. “No, it won’t. Luckily, I had a similar problem a few years ago. The only problem is that if we use what I used back then, it will be ruined if it’s not real silver.”

“For the price we paid it should be.” Helen shrugged. “What did you use?”

Maybelle’s mouth curved into a mysterious smile. “I’ll be right back.”

She headed to the back of the store, to the small kitchenette where she collected what she needed and returned to the tables she and Helen had set out for the task.

“Ketchup?” Helen asked, surprised.

“Yes, I know, right?” Maybelle laughed. “When I just opened the store, I went to an estate sale and an old biddy told me that was what her mother used. Something in the acidity cleans off the stains. You just slather it on.” Maybelle squirted some ketchup into a small bowl. “Then you leave it for fifteen minutes before you wash and rinse with hot soapy water.”

Maybelle continued to slather the carving knife and fork with ketchup, being careful not to get any ketchup on the ivory handles when Helen nudged her. “Isn’t that Elliot Magnus’ wife?”

Maybelle looked up and recognized Mrs. Magnus immediately. She was the epitome of a trophy wife. Everyone knew her job was to spend Elliot Magnus’ money, and she had no problem doing that by various means, including plastic surgery, hair implants, and frequent teeth whitenings.

“Do you think that’s what Barbie will look like when she turns sixty? As if all the parts are perfect separately, but combined they don’t really fit anymore because the age is slipping through the cracks?” Maybelle whispered to Helen.

Helen giggled under her breath. “Maybelle! You should wish to look that good at that age.”

“I won’t because I’m comfortable with the idea of aging. I think that every line tells a story, and I’d like my face to tell a story when I’m old and grey.” Maybelle set the carving set aside and set a timer on her watch.

“The story of a wannabe sleuth chicken lady?” Helen teased.

“Hush,” Maybelle said under her breath as she overheard something of interest being discussed between Mrs. Magnus and her friend.

“So, this is where it happened?” Brunette Barbie asked Mrs. Magnus.

Mrs. Magnus nodded. “Right here, and can you believe Elliot was here. Apparently, the entire night was a disaster after that.” She spoke as if they were the only two people in the store, as if Maybelle and Helen didn’t even exist.
