Celeste goes into the living room and comes back with a young man clutching a camera. He looks slightly confused as he reaches out to shake the hand Iâm offering him.
âThis is Seth Powers,â Celeste says. Then she heads to the other side of the room with another officer to give her initial statement.
âI already talked to one of the officers,â he says. âIs there something wrong?â
âNo,â I tell him. âIâm Dean Steele. Iâm a private investigator consulting on this case. This is Detective Peter Bronson. Heâs heading up the investigation. Weâre asking for your help.â
âMy help?â Seth asks. âIâm happy to do anything I can, but Iâm not sureâ¦â
âYour footage,â I say. âCeleste told us that you were taking video of tonightâs event.â
âOh,â he says. âYes, I was. Iâm a content producer. I have an online video channel that covers events, activities, and news around the community. I was covering the festivities today and got some footage of the party. I didnât record the entire thing, but youâre more than welcome to everything I have.â
âAnything you have could be useful,â I tell him. âWe donât even know what weâre looking for exactly at this moment. We just want to see everything we possibly can that happened at the party.â
âSure.â
âFirst, though, weâve been talking to a few people about a specific guest at the party tonight. We havenât been able to track him down and would like to talk to him about what he might have seen,â the detective says deftly, carefully skirting around any suspicion we have so that it doesnât start to spread around.
âAll right,â Seth says, looking back and forth between us. âWho is it?â
âHeâs been described as wearing an elaborate peacock mask,â I say. âDoes that sound familiar to you?â
âA peacock mask? Most people were wearing masks tonight, and Iâm pretty sure I saw a few that had peacock feathers,â Seth says.
âApparently, this was a really elaborate mask,â Bronson says. âA whole headdress version, like a hat.â
âYes,â Seth says. âNow that I think about it, I did see that. Iâm pretty sure I got him on camera, but I didnât get a chance to interview him. I wanted to talk to him about his mask, but it seemed like I couldnât quite catch up with him. Like maybe he didnât want to be on camera.â
âSo, you didnât talk to him?â I ask.
âI exchanged a few quick words with him. Nothing significant. I asked if he was from Twilight Cove, and he told me no, that he was visiting a friend. I was going to ask him more, but someone else got my attention, and he walked away when I turned to talk to them. Like I said, though, it could have just been that he didnât want to be on camera. Some people are really camera shy and just donât want to talk in front of one,â he says. âIâm sure I have some footage of him though, if you want to see what he looked like and was doing.
