Franklin called me the next morning. “You and Hunter are in the paper this morning.”

“Pictures?”

“No, the article is about Rudy Lee. It mentioned you and Hunter were questioned. Looks like Rudy kicked the bucket before you did.”

“I’m all torn up about it.”

“Lettie Lemore got it wrong.”

“Not by much. Rudy is dead, and someone did try to kill me. I’d say she was pretty much on target.”

Franklin mused, “We both stuck our feet in that muck without looking. Now, we’ve got Hunter mixed up in it.”

“You can’t go around thinking everyone is a complete ass. Hunter needed a tenant on the farm. How were we supposed to know that Rudy would be such a harbinger of doom?”

“At least Hunter got some money out of it.”

I asked, “Has anyone claimed his horses?”

“No one has contacted Hunter yet, but it’s still early. Rudy’s only been dead a day.”

“Does the paper say who Rudy’s next of kin is?”

“Nope.”

“Any suspects?”

“No idea who did it. The police are asking for information.”

“They must be hard up then.”

Franklin said, “I’ve got to go to work, but I’ll pop around later.”

“Gather up Matt and Emmeline. Come to dinner around sevenish.”

“See you then.” He hung up.

Grabbing a small bag, I called to Baby, and we went outside to check on the chickens. They were chasing bugs and having a grand time. I checked their water and feed inside the coop. No signs of digging around the coop. Crossing my fingers, I opened the flaps to their nesting beds. Low and behold, eggs! Only two, but it was a start. Two lovely small chocolate brown eggs from the Marans. I was happy that my plan was working, and the chickens were calming down.

I trudged into the woods, where I kept a small bowl. From my bag, I poured dog food into it. I had been leaving dog food for the fox to keep her away from my chickens, and it seemed to do the trick! That and the electric fence. I knew I shouldn’t feed wildlife, but I hated to see the fox struggle.

Baby sniffed the dog food and turned his nose up at it.

“Ah, too good for the likes of you?” I said. “Here’s a treat then. Your favorite.” Wagging his tail, Baby looked at me with anticipation as I slipped him a cheese treat which I kept in my pocket. Chowing it down, he nudged me for more and I obliged. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw movement in the bushes, thinking it must be the fox. “Come on, Baby. We need to get home.”

Leaving the fox to her own devices, I went about my day, but I kept thinking about Rudy Lee. If Rudy had money, why was he living in such a sketchy neighborhood? And what would have been the motive for Rudy to kill me? None of this made sense. The day went by quickly until I noticed the sun low in the sky. I checked my watch and noticed the hours had gotten away from me.
