Chapter Fourteen

Her stomach protested madly as she neared Mr. Lasco’s quintessential food stand. She realized that she missed lunch. Goldie tried to ignore the loud rumblings emanating from her middle but swore she could detect the hint of perfectly cooked hot dogs wafting into her coupe. It was as though the vendor kept a large fan to blow the tantalizing fragrance across the city and lure his customers to him.

She knew it was imperative that she speak with Gid but surely it wouldn’t hurt to stop for just a quick bite? It wouldn’t take long at all, she reasoned. And it wasn’t as if she needed to drive all about Southbank in search of Gid. She knew he would be at the post office, just as he was every workday. Just as the post office inspector should be.

She felt herself relax after the resolution of her internal debate. She was smiling in anticipation of the tasty meal as she found a nearby parking space. It wasn’t until she was nearly upon the very spot where Mr. Lasco operated his business that she spotted her brother’s reporter standing nearby with a sandwich in his hand.

She breezed past him to place her own order. “Hello, Mr. Lasco. I’ll have my regular.”

“Yes, Miss Weston.” Mr. Lasco’s hands moved with a certainty borne from years of practice. “It’s a lovely day to be outside.”

“That it is,” Goldie agreed as she exchanged payment for her food. She shifted position to add some of the uniquely colored mustard.

“Of course, some of us are outside no matter the weather.” There was a twinkle in his eyes as he spoke. “Not that I’m complaining.”

She glanced up at the umbrella above his workspace. “I imagine that doesn’t provide much cover during a bad storm.”

“At least I can duck inside one of the nearby shops when it rains too hard. I guess I’m like the postman in that regard. I spend a lot of time talking with the man that handles deliveries on this route. Speaking of which, I’ve been seeing your brother-in-law quite a bit.” Mr. Lasco’s smile dimmed a bit. “Not that I recognized him at first.”

Goldie’s hands froze with the sandwich just in front of her lips. She shifted her eyes to see if Corky Sherwood was within hearing range. Upon discovering he wasn’t, she lowered her sandwich to ask questions.

“And why is that?” She knew her voice sounded strange but she managed a friendly smile to encourage more information.

Mr. Lasco looked around before responding. He also lowered his voice as though sharing a secret. “On account of his clothes.” He motioned to his face. “And I never saw him unshaven in the past like I have lately. It took me by surprise, that’s for sure.”

“Really?” Goldie forced her lips into a wider smile. “Perhaps he was running errands on the weekend?”

“Except this was during the week, and it happened more than once.” Mr. Lasco straightened as he motioned for a young couple to approach his stand.

Goldie moved aside to make room for the new customers.
