“What are you doing here?” Grey asked, his voice containing a distinct edge.

Addie shook herself out of the fog that had enclosed her.

“What Grey meant to say was, good morning to you as well, Mr. Martin. I’m fine, thank you. And you?”

She held so still, the muscles in her back felt as though they might snap at any moment. But Addie refused to show any emotion. He might be what he said he was. He might not. He might even be her stalker.

“I’m very well, thank you for asking.” He glanced at Grey, his expression giving nothing away. “As I said, I merely stopped in to make sure you had recovered from your nasty shock. I’m on my way home this morning and thought I would check before leaving Ocean Grove.”

“You have to admit, your timing is a bit…well, suspect,” added Grey.

“If I had any idea what you were talking about, Grey, I might.”

“Gentlemen, please lower your voices.” Addie looked over Robert’s shoulder to smile at Jane. “Did you find something for yourself?”

Jane, seemingly oblivious to the thick tension in the air, returned the smile. She held up some books. “Something steamy for now, and June’s book club novel as well.”

“Wonderful!” Addie rang up Jane’s purchases, all the while keeping an eye on Grey and Mr. Martin. Goodness only knew what her friend was capable of. “Here you go,” she told Jane after completing the sale and placing the books in one of the store’s reusable bags.

“Oh, I love these,” Jane exclaimed. “And look, you even have ‘smiling dogs’ on it.” She pointed to the picture of the girls on the front of the bag.

“She even has them with her,” joked Grey, pointing behind the counter.

“What?” Jane leaned over the countertop. “Oh, my. You’re just cute as buttons, aren’t you?”

“Would you like to meet them?” Addie asked, aware of Mr. Martin standing there, silently, yet taking in the conversation.

“Oh, could I?”

“Sure. Give me a second.” She put a leash on each dog and led them around the counter. Both wagged their tails and stretched their necks to reach Jane’s outstretched hands.

“They come to work with me daily and love to greet customers. Gracey, say hello,” she commanded her dog. Gracey barked once and held up a paw.

“Oh, my goodness,” Jane squealed. She squatted down to pet Gracey’s head. “That’s adorable.”

Lily, as though not happy about being left out, woofed softly next to Addie.

Addie laughed. “Don’t worry, Lily, I didn’t forget about you. Say hello.”

Lily woofed again and raised her paw like her sister had. Jane rewarded her with a pat on the head.

“We have an eight-year-old daughter as well. If she saw these cuties, there’d be no hearing the end of it. That one’s dog and horse crazy, for sure.”

“Weren’t we all at that age?” joked Addie. She liked meeting new customers. Many had become friends, especially those who joined her book club. But right now, with Robert Martin standing a mere ten feet away and never taking his gaze from her, she needed Jane to leave.
