CHAPTER 12

How had this item come into Willow Dawn’s possession? If it was real and valuable, it wasn’t a stretch to imagine someone murdering her for it. An ancient artifact worth a big pile of money was a very valid motive. That’s what it was doing in the goat feed—she knew someone was after it, so she hid it.

The murderer hadn’t been smart enough to know that he wouldn’t be able to find it once he’d killed her.

And this paper. It was awkward to edge it out because my finger barely fit inside the hollow space, but I was getting there. It was probably covered in hieroglyphs. Ancient writings that would unlock some archeological mystery that had been stumping scientists for decades.There. I could now tug the paper out the rest of the way. It was quite stiff and white. It was smooth and flat, or it would be once I unrolled it. I knew I shouldn’t touch it, but I’d be careful. I just wanted a peek.

Deep down, I knew, even before I set the paper on the counter and spread my fingers as I unrolled and flattened it. This paper was new. It was just too white and crisp and whole to be an ancient artifact.

The English words clinched it.

This was a printout. There were two pages on the front and two on the back, shrunk to fit. I’d seen enough legal documents from my father’s work to recognize them. The print was too small for me to want to read the whole thing. I scanned it. From what I gathered amongst all that legalese was that it regarded a new company—One Step Ahead Software.

The part I could easily understand listed the ownership percentages of the company. I didn’t recognize any of the names, except there was a Connor. I didn’t know if this was that Connor, but since this appeared to be a software company and he worked for a software company, I had to wonder. It would be easy enough to find out. All I had to do was learn the last name of the Connor from ZZ Optimization. A guy named Travis Moss was going to get the biggest share in the company—forty percent. This Connor was going to get twenty percent. The rest of the company would be divided between “owners as listed in sub-document F.” There were no sub-documents A through E—let alone F—attached.

But I was more confused than ever. It seemed pretty obvious that Willow Dawn was trying to hide this paper, not the fake jade cylinder container, in the goat feed. That meant the paper was important, though I had no idea why. I needed to turn it over to the police. It might give them some valuable information for their investigation. But before I let it out of my hands, I wanted to make sure I could look at it again if I wanted to. I took out my cell phone and snapped clear pictures. Then I carefully rolled the page back up and secured it in the cylinder.
