“By the way, Edgar,” Maurice continued. “I met your sister last night, not far from here. She may have told you that I offered to escort her home.”

“You must be mistaken,” Edgar answered coldly. “Margaret did not go out last night.”

“Edgar, I may not know your wife, but I’ve seen your sister,” Maurice insisted. “That red hair is striking enough, along with the scar across her cheek. If you didn’t know she was out then I’m sorry to have to tell you, but I’m sure you wouldn’t want to be kept in ignorance.”

He didn’t appear sorry. Catherine was torn between alarm at his news and a strong desire to strike him. By the tension in his body, she knew that Edgar felt the same.

They left before they could act on their impulse.

“Do you think he really saw Margaret?” Catherine asked. “I was sure she had gone up to bed.”

“So was I,” Edgar answered shortly.

His anger sizzled in the cold air. Catherine said no more until they reached the house. She put her hand on Edgar’s arm as they entered.

“If it’s true,” she pleaded. “I’m sure there’s a good reason.”

“Not good enough to put her life in danger,” Edgar said.
