CHAPTER EIGHTEEN

"I can't believe she pulled a knife on me," moaned Dex, his head in his hands. He was sitting on Auntie Akamai's couch.

Auntie Akamai was sitting in her chair, fuming. "That little…"

"Poopie-head!" screeched Paulie.

"Yes, sweetums. She is a poopie-head." Auntie Akamai shot an exasperated look at Dex, who shrugged.

"I'm not sure I taught him that one," he said. "And it could've been worse."

"Or more appropriate." I smiled at Paulie. "Good going, bird."

"Ding-dong!" Paulie then screeched at me.

"Anyway," said Auntie Akamai with an eye roll. "So based on her reaction, she was indicating that she knows who wears Crocs. Who do you think it might be?"

I lifted a shoulder. "No clue. But it does remind me we weren't given the chance to ask her what Riley's long deliveries were."

"Or Zane's," said Dex. "Do you think she'd know or even be aware? He was her boyfriend, after all. Well, both of them were at one point or another."

Auntie Akamai and I exchanged a look.

Yeah, he hadn't noticed my haircut yet. And I wasn't going to tell him that easily.

"Ruby. Texted to apologize. Said she was startled." Dex glanced at me. "And she says you're lying about the shoes."

I pursed my lips and shook my head. "Definitely not. I saw the print, and it clearly said Croc. And Detective Ray knows. The question is who was wearing Crocs at a dance."

"Someone who changed their shoes like you taking yours off." Dex shrugged.

"Yes, I took mine off to dance. I didn't put awkward, clunky shoes on. Can people even dance in those?" I asked Dex. "You can probably dance in Vans though."

"So maybe someone from outside the dance," Auntie Akamai said.

Doyle stalked into the room but froze when he saw Dex. He still wasn't used to him.

"I wonder if Detective Ray's checking everyone's shoes on the resort's surveillance camera." Auntie Akamai begrudgingly handed over a sesame cracker to Paulie, despite his potty beak. Then she fished around in her deep pocket until she pulled out a meaty cat treat, which she held out to Doyle.

"He'd probably find the killer that way regardless of shoes. Or has. I wonder if there's an issue with the video." I watched as Doyle took the treat from Auntie Akamai and then disappeared around the back of the couch to eat it. "If he had a video, wouldn't he have made an arrest already?"

"Who knows?" Dex glanced up from his phone. "I'm asking Ruby if she knows about Riley's side gig."

"Or Zane's," I said. "If she had better hair, I'd assume she knows."

Dex looked up at me, confused.

Doyle sauntered out from behind the couch and sat to lick his paw, giving me a reproachful look—for what I wasn't sure. Not giving him a treat? Having a boyfriend?

Suddenly Doyle dropped his paw, turned his attention to the front door, then bolted behind the couch.

"Someone must be here," Auntie Akamai said, and sure enough, there was a knock at the door.

I answered it, and my stomach flipped when I saw it was Detective Ray.
